has anyone mounted a ladder to the side of an 80 series? Like incorporated the bottom mount into the wings of a bumper?

You mention a "bottom mount." I assume then that there would be a top mount to your ladder concept, and that this top mount would attach to the body in some fashion. Be careful with this, as the body articulates separate from the frame (and bumper), so if you had a ladder that mounted to the bumper on the bottom, and to the body (such as a roof rack or the rain gutter) on the top, the ladder would be a solid connection between the body and frame. I can imagine this causing all sorts of havoc on a rig taken over rough ground.

I can imagine an effective ladder utilizing a bottom step incorporated into a bumper wing, with a totally separate ladder hanging from the body. I saw two small marine fold-down steps screwed to the rear body corner of a 60 series once. That was simple, did not hang off the side, and worked fairly well for climbing up on to the roof rack (using the bumper as the first step and the roof rack as the hand hold). My 2 cents... Cheers, J

Here is my side-mount ladder!

I believe there is also a thread with p/n for OEM steps that mount up the D-pillar, kind of cool.

Do you have link for the old thread? I cannot find it on my phone. I want to check if I can get a set from overseas.

This is the only pic I have of my ladder, sorry it is not a good off road shot or anything. Not even me in the pic...
I am pretty sure it is Jaos (same as the rack).
It is pretty sturdy, but does add a little weight to the hatch, possibly stressing those components. I don't leave it on all the time...

Sorry, just re-read OP, you were looking for SIDE mount!

Where'd you get the swing out that mounts to the body?

In the pic above my post there is a swing out tire carrier. does anyone know where i can get one of these. i would love to do the whole bumper on my LX450 but one of these would work in the meantime.

I had been following that thread for some time, were they ever found to be available in the US?

So yes to clarify, I have a Hanna rear bumper with dual swing outs, tire & fuel. I am fabbing a work light mount to add to the fuel can side but adding a ladder there doesn't seem practical. you would have to climb over the fuel cans, and if the gates are open, then your climbing into the air. Also the open hatch would be in the way. With my Hanna I have the tube wing protection, I was thinking about adding a ladder on one side, attached to the tube via clamps at the bottom, and tying it into a yet to be build roof rack up top. I've seen defender rack systems that have this kind of set up, but not sure about the bumper attachment. regarding the info in post #2 about the flex between body and frame, would it be better to attach it to the body on the bottom as opposed to the bumper? I was really hoping to not have to open up the interior panels to reenforce the body, nor drill into the skin.

Additionally i was thinking about if a ladder was feasible on one side the other side, while not a ladder would allow me to keep a few items a bit closer to reach, (axe, shovel, pick) the rack design is primarily flat with railing only in the front basket portion. I intend to put a RTT up there when needed. I'm a firm believer in keeping the CoG low, I've seen what happens with vehicles overloaded up high.

On another note, I found these fold up steps, pretty compact and out of the way.

I like the out-of-the-way design of those folding steps. Where did you find them?

they are cast aluminum mast steps. available at most marine supply shops. when folded up they extend 1.5 inches out. The step is 5 inches.
