no, no, a wheeling rig... get the money from the insurance, buy a nice rig and use this one for wheeling...
I think a young bloke in his situation needs two vehichle like he needs another hole in his doonga. Best he recoup what he can and start again even if its a 2wd to get to work.Toys come later.

Damn Nick,
Sorry to hear! Good job on keepin' it together tho'. I'm most likely going to be in your neck of the woods for a couple of days at the end of the month and would be able to help you with stripping the truck or fixin' if that's what you plan. Let me know. I'd be happy to help.
Peter

Well welcome to the club. You'll be reminded of this incident over and over and over and over and over again till you die! Just warning you!

You know I built a couple of wooden boats, restored a sailboat etc...I was sick when I saw yours in the pictures. The truck looks totaled, given the was ICBC operates. But you can't overstate the fact that nobody was hurt, I've seen damage like that in highway accidents where nobody survived.

Take the insurance money and start thinking about your next rig, make sure it's a Landcruiser. Load it to the gills with off-road equpiment and maybe an exo-cage?

Nick, I can't say anything that hasn't always been said. It was great of you to document this, and you probably saved a couple of us from doing the same thing...your experience will definitely help others. I'm ultimately glad to hear you are ok. That's really all that matters in the end. As you said, there will be other trucks. :)

I would also be extremely interested to hear how ICBC deals with this scenario as you have put a lot of money into your truck, as have most of us with 81's - and I'm not sure if you took a special rider for your truck or not that will cover this increased value / spending.

Thank goodness everyone got out safe. These pics make me a bit sick to my stomach. I can almost imagine your experience as mine. Were you wheeling around Cranbrook?

Be cautious about ICBC. They may have a policy whereby they insure vehicles only on named roads. FSR are named, but the little trails off them often aren't. You may want get a topo map from the library so you can get your ducks in a row before you go and see an adjuster. I can see any insurance company being a hassle on this one.

Please report back on the ICBC experience for the interest of BC offroaders.

Good luck.

I have had good experience with ICBC, on some very un-named roads. Just be nice to the adjuster, and have all your paperwork/story straight; they don't wanto prolong the process any more than you do.

I've seen your rig around... were you in Victoria a while back?

Sorry you rolled her, but on the other hand, that's what she's for.

Nobody hurt is what counts. Trucks can be fixed easily; people, not so much.

Well thank you very much for everyones messages.
I really appreciate it.

Everyone is right. People are much more important.
We are so blessed to be safe.

I should also say, the canoe is/was cruiser_guy's.
He made it in the 1980's.
We refinished it this year.
I imagine its about 150-250 hours to build one from scratch.
Cruiser_guy could better say.

We got the truck out today.
Report is below:

LAND CRUISER ROCK!!!
I have to say it.
I added 4 liters of ATF and it drove out!!!!
Under its own power!
I also added 4 liters of oil to top up.

It drives normally. Nothing wrong but the body damage.
Also, all the doors and hatches close and open normally!
Only the hood is bent!

Here are the pics.

Here is how it was when I cam back this morning.
Look at the flex. It is maxed out.
Also notice the roof rack and gutters.

Back:

Uphill side. Look at the tire jammed in there.
Best part is the 285/75/16 fits perfect. No rub!
You can also see the canoe is broken.
Most pics make it look better than it is.
It is dead. :(
Notice the rack again.

Front in better light:

Front again.
At this point we stater unloading the cruiser.
Put all the stuff into cruiser_guy's BJ60.
5.jpg

Well. I drove right out with cruiser_guy guiding:
6.jpg

Better pic of the damaged roof.
The canoe came right down on it.
The canoe did cause the damage.
But it also help break the fall, and stopped us from rolling further.
7.jpg

You can see all the ATF fluid here.
The hood liner was soaked in it.
8.jpg

Some side damage:
9.jpg

Rear damage: Notice the D pillar too.
Every panel needs major work.
10.jpg

Another view. The gutters on both sides are also ruined.
11.jpg

Me backing up.
12.jpg

Turning around.
The truck almost looks okay from this far away.
Up close its a different story.
We left the canoe on the roof to drive out.
13.jpg

I'm out of here!

Drove it all the way back to town.
The ICBC people were surprised it was drivable.
I think they were surprised I self recovered myself and drove it in.

Anyways, truck is there for the weekend.
Will deal with it on Monday.
Not sure what is happening yet.
There initial though is a write-off.
Being a JDM the will work with me to establish value.

Time will tell how it ends up.
I have not had great luck with my cruisers.
First one was stolen and now this.

I will replace it with another.
I love cruiser's and am hooked.
Did I mention they rock!!!!

I will keep you posted.

Cheers,
Nick

We were on our way to whiteboar lake.
But I took the wrong FSR without realizing it.

As far as my luck goes.
It sucks! But you know what. Thats okay.
Things will work out.

Cheers,
Nick

oh my, that is a long walk out!!!:( i did the same thing up Baker Mt. and had to walk home from there. Used a turfer to get it out but i didn't get to the point of actually rolling it. i was sick after realizing what i did and have since been a little more cautious. they are just trucks but they are expensive trucks too.
were you watching the driver's mirror and didn't see that rise on the other side of the truck?

hope it gets resolved soon for you .... but relax a little this weekend... there isn't anything you can do now.

i was going to email you and mention that i got a hannibal a while back. the guy delivered it right to my door!! probably not a good time to talk about that.... another day.

cheers nick

Nick,

Although it's got damages all over the place I'm glad that you got the rig out of there!

Now you're ready to make into a trail rig. ;)

Good luck, Nick!

Some serious character building going on here.

Good on ya!

I feel like I need to make a rant about this.
Much has been happing to me in the last few years, and I want to share.
_______________________________________________

I am a Christian, and the last few years I have felt like Job in the bible.
But I am learning to trust in God and give everything over to him.

Here are a few bigger things that have happened that I can recall.
There has been lots more ups and down day to day and week to week.

-I was rear-ended in my Toyota Mini-truck
-My wife left me (divorced) me after we struggled for the last 1.5 years in our marriage.
-3 days later she found someone else.
-Had to deal with the selling of the house by myself.
-Had to give up my dog to a home because I could not take him with no house.
-Left my marriage with very little and around $15K in debt (went in with money in the bank)
-I live paycheck to paycheck now.
-I needed a truck (mini was rear ended and needed work) Found a Rover Disco for what I thought was a steal. Ended up not being a good truck for me and lost $3500 just to get out after 7 months trying to sell.
-Search day and night for 2 months for a 60 series. Found a BJ60 in great shape. Stolen after only 6 weeks.
-Walked for 2 months in winter because I had no truck.
-My HDJ81 had a few expensive break downs (none of which I could afford. a few threads on this)
-Now my HDJ81 was rolled.

But do you know what?
Every single time God has come through and provided.
The Lord gives and the Lord takes. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
I am much closer to him now than 2 years ago.

-I now have met someone who loves me back as I love her (cruiser_guy's daughter).
-My 60 was replaced with a HDJ81.
-House sold and was able to chunk down debt.
-I have been able to make every payment and a little more (now only have $7000-7500 in debt (from my previous marriage) - other than my truck debt)

Now that my 80 is rolled I don't know what will become of it, or my vehicle situation.
But I am not worried, because the 80 was never mine.
It all belongs to God.
Much good is actually coming out the rolled 80.
There is much relationship building going on with people.
As well as many other prosects.

Yes rolling the 80 was bad.
But much good is coming out of it.
I am not worried about the truck.
The LandCruiser is just a truck. Nothing more.

I feel so blessed that we all walked away. I can't stress this enough.
Only injury was Cruiser_guy. He had 1 small scratch. Hardly worth noting. Not much worse than a mosquto bite!
We all walked away (and were able to walk 14km's out. Including cruiser_guy with his bad heart (he is awaiting emergency open heart surgery), and a bad hip.

Sure, the truck is wrecked.
Sure, I am walking for the next few months (but I am still able to walk)
Sure, the canoe is wrecked, (home insurance might cover it).
But I am not worrying. Worrying does nothing for you. Worrying can't change anything.
God has always come through and everytime I come out all the better.

Anyways, I just wanted to share.
I feel like I need to tell the world.
God is good.

Cheers,
Nick :)
