well dude...thats sucks and im glad you and crew are safe...

But I gotta say the damage doesnt look that bad....Hell it has less dents than my rig and the rain gutters in better shape too. I would lift it and wheel it like there is no tomorrow...

Maybe this will get my daughter to insure and drive her '55 like it was meant to be!! http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=414794&highlight=fj55

It's basically ready to go but she's afraid it won't be reliable. I tell her she needs to drive it around town to find the issues and there WILL be issues! No one does this much work to a vehicle and has NO issues.

Right now it's serving as bee's nest duty behind her house :(

NICK

Well Nick after reading your last post.
I have to say I hope that if I'm ever in your situation I can handle it as well as you. I see from that post your luck really has not been the best, BUt as you point out for all the bad luck your getting some good luck out of it. I am really hoping that the good luck starts to out weigh the bad for you.
Like your self I'm sure that things will work out with the truck and with Cruiser guy's daughter.
Always enjoy your posts with help for others, I hope now that you can get help some how from all of us..
Keep the chine held up high Nick..:D

Best regards

having a cruiser stolen and then rolling one isn't exactly bad luck. Its very normal. Hundreds of cars get stolen each year, or thousands. Just the way it is. Same with accidents, they happen. So lets not beat your self up over this. Thinking you have bad luck. On the contrary you just got some things out of the way. :)

no worries. Life happens. Now go cook a nice steak on the BBQ and listen to some tunes.

The LandCruiser is just a truck. Nothing more.

Whichever "real" god might be OK with you, but the cruiser gods sure don't like you and it's not going to get any better with the statement above  :flipoff2:

Sounds like a plan. Problem is: Some walked off with our BBQ 2 months ago. Right out of the back yard. Not kidding. I wish I was.

Cheers,
Nick

Nick,
let's be realistic for a minute or two.
as BB said, a stolen truck is not bad luck, it can happen to anyone.
i will add that inexpereience is not bad luck either. the roll is a sad event BUT it was inexperience that lead to the roll. when your ass end is up that high you can tell that something is wrong. stop, get out survey the situation and proceed. ESPECIALLY when by yourself on a trail back in the middle of no where, get out and look...
it is easy to say in hindsight that the turn down hill would have been much safer than backing uphill and at an angle to boot... when going uphill, keep your nose up, when going down hill keep your nose down... words to live by. unless you have a lot of experience (and are willing to roll your unit) NEVER go sideways on a hill.
what happened to you has happened to many greenie drivers. it sucks but could have been prevented.
what is impressive is that you righted the truck on your own. serious congrates. job well done.
you learned (or hopefully learned) a valuable leason here. i am very sorry about your truck but more so about the canoe.
here is my suggestion, get the insurance money (should be around $20,000) buy back the truck for 10% ($2000) and buy a civic (or some other fuel efficeint car) for a daily driver. spend some time ripping off the roof and either repairing the damage with a donor roof or turn it into a bush truck (and aquire the experience you need in a beater) and enjoy it at runs. (or, the least of my favorite options, strip it and sell it for parts).
no matter what ever way you go the result will be fine...

Wayne, another thing that I do is if I can't see to proceed from the drivers seat I use a spotter. Nothing to be ashamed of in my books and I have yet to roll my truck or have a serious incident in nearly 20 years of 'Cruiser ownership.
I was there and I'd have been glad to spot as I had Nick spot for me when I didn't KNOW it was OK when we went to get his truck on Friday with my truck.

agreed, a knowledgeable spotter is a god-send...
please don't get the idea that i am coming down on Nick but every accident in the bush that i have seen has been driver error due to over confidence, inexperience, stubborness, being a show off or mechanical fault due to the above or neglect. never have i seen it due to "bad luck".

Considering what happened to you and how you handled it, I'd say you have two options.

1. Rebuild your daily drive and/or expedition truck.

2. Consider this an opportunity to build an all out beater out of a truck you already know and do the things you were afraid of doing because your truck was too nice to beat up or risk rolling.

Frankly, from your story, I get the idea that you have a fair amount of knowledge about recovery and how your truck behaves. You certainly aren't a raw beginner with a looks like and strike me more as a knowledgeable driver. You might want to get yourself a small DD and reserve that truck as a total fun toy that you can use to expand your driving and handling skills.

I agree, don't think for a second that you have more bad luck that the rest of us. But, from reading your post it seems like you've got a good attitude about the whole experience. As others have said, this will make a good story in the future!

Vehicle damage is part of 4x4ing, whether the driver is experienced or not. It is possible to do light 4x4ing (or 2x4/1x4ing!) and not damage your vehicle, but I've found you really have to know when to quit and not do an obstacle! It's tough sometimes to not do some stuff knowing that you won't be back up in that area for a while. :)

Great advice by Wayne - and something all of us can learn from. I'm really impressed by Nick's maturity in dealing with this issue and learning from it. In my experience, something good oftens comes out of a perceived "bad" situation. Knowledge, experience, or wisdom, usually. Seems like the most intense learning comes from the most intense experiences.

nickw - is a personal good friend, i can vouch for his good character and good judgment.

for me it's not so much the situation, it's how you deal with it.

the nature of off roading, is unpredictable at times.

Nick,

Don't sweat the rollover. Life happens, but everythig happens for a reason. BTW, if ICBC writes this off then it'll be auctioned off for waaaayy most than $2K. I'd take the insurance money, buy another one and then buy the rolled one and bush it or part it out.

Cheers.

Please keep the scriptures off of here, This is a mulit faith open forum. I respect that you have faith.

Nick, have you done any body work? You would be surprised how many FZJ80's have been in head on accidents. Should be a good roof you can install, also a quarter and some doors. Buy back the truck if it gets written off. The truck is worth fixing. You have the mechanicals in decent shape. Its a known vehicle.

I think that is a bit tough it was given as a link for a member and no one has to read it. A while ago someone was promoting Islam quite freely in chat a couple of times. Certainly more family orientated than some of the talk and photos that have been in the chat section. No offence BB but fair go.Delete this if you feel you need to.regards gazza

Whoa! Nobody here is being judged for their beliefs and nobody is being victimized by reading this or expected to belief anything they read. I certainly am not expected to believe everything I read on here, am I? When a man needs encouragement I will meet his needs where I can. Nick has clearly expressed anguish over a few things. Yeah, its not related to tech but he's still reaching out to people who he shares something common with - wheeling cruisers. Chill out on the censorship of things that help us to be human to each other. Now lets talk about tech...

Sorry guys, but I did not realise my faith woulf offend anyone.
If anyone is offended please let me know. No offence was meant.

I am just waiting now until I talk to ICBC tomorrow.

As far as body work. I have done some. Sheldon recommended a possible roof swap. Right now there are many different routes I could go. I want to wait until I hear what ICBC has to say. Most people will probably be very interested in it. That will determine where I go with it.

So as for ICBC I was going to make another thread. As it is a seperate event.
There will be tech. But I am thinking of the JDM forum. What do you think brownbear? It is diesel cruiser releated (as the high value is because the OEM diesel), but its also JDM. It could belong in both. Should I go here or there?

Cheers,
Nick

No problem, no offence was taken or imposed. Everyone is very open to thier beliefs. But please lets not hijack this thread, I did not mean to do that. No debate is needed.

But this thread is going to moved to the JDM section, where it will be of great reference for other JDm owners on what to do when something happens to the JDM. Insurance wise.

The redirect will stay here so we know how to find it. Cheers Nick and I hope it all goes very well tomorrow.
