Hey everyone. I just got a call from a friend...... he has a 83 fj60 fully stock and was driving when a loud high pitch squeeeeel came and then the temp caused him to over heat. All of his belts are fine the fan spins and no sign of hose leaks. he is far away so I want to bring the right parts with me..
Here is a list of things I want to bring..... Please add anything you feel would be helpful or you may think is broke.
1. Tools
2.coolant/water
3.waterpump/gasket
4.belt
5.?
6.? ........?
Thanks for the help!

Some 5/8" hose and some clamps, just in case. Maybe a radiator cap for good measure.

Did the smog pump slow the belt and cause overheating? The squeeling stopped and then over heated.

Definitely could be the smog pump as it shares a belt with the fan...

CRAP!!!!! Those are spendy.$$$ Auto zone is my only quick option and if they have one it is more than likely going to be a piece of crap. I should bring one though. Huh?

Bring as many tools as you can, you never know what you end up needing.

a squeal, as many have noted, is likely a belt. the 2F has the same belt for smog pump and waterpump, so if a frozen smog pump freezes or ruins the belt coolant will not circulate, and it will overheat.

probably not a ruined waterpump, since that should not squeal.

fixes: remove smog pump, put on shorter belt. or gut the smog pump, so the pulley spins freely. I don't know 2Fs very well, so I don't know how much adjustment is in that circuit, and whether the smog pump is the adjuster for the belt, but I doubt it.

so bring tools to remove the smog pump, to adjust the belt, and probably some shorter belts. maybe you can approximately measure on yours how much shorter they have to be if you were to run without smog pump.

hopefully some 2F experts will chime in shortly.
cheers,
j

My last high pitched squeal was a smog pump that went kaput

Dido. I tried to gut it, but the bearing was seized. So I ran the AC belt around the alternator, engine and water pump to get by. I had no power steering, but at least I could drive it until my de-smog kit came. Yay! Do any of the belts burn and smoke?

dont know if the belts burn or smoke.... he is on the side of the road overheated and now he wont answer his phone for me.

The smog pump is the adjustment point for the belt for the smog/water pump. When mine seized up my only option was to tear it apart until there was nothing but a pulley left. For awhile after that I ran a home made pulley system I made until the bearing exploded.

Adjuster is on the smog pump, so if you're going to bypass, measure carefully.

Can i bypass the power steering and smog and run a shorter belt to the alt fan and crank only? and if I can does anybody know what length the belt might be? 48 inches??? or so?

I guess - waterpump. Had the same symptoms but heard a huge pop - mass carnage in my case. Bring razor blades to gentley clean the surface so the gasket will seal properly.

If you need to omit a pulley (ie- smog pump) bring a pair of pantyhose as a makeshift belt.

I crudely measured for an alt, crank, and water pump belt and came up with 50.5". It wasn't an exact science, I just routed a piece of string around the appropriate pulleys. I would say with the adjustment at the alternator a belt of the aforementioned size should get you home. Make sure the belt's top width is correct.

He needs a belt # TR22495 or 22500. Run it from the crank to waterpump to alternator. That is the standard number for a belt on a non-PS 2F.

IIRC, Nuclearlemon drove for months in this configuration. It's a good upper body workout, steering a wagon without any power assist.:)

Jim, if my NAPA background serves me correctly those would be 49.5" and 50" respectively, correct?

That's nothing. Our BJ60s didn't have PS as an option until '83. I nearly broke both thumbs in the years I wheeled my 1982. It wasn't uncommon to have your passenger help with the steering on the trail. Back then I thought my 31s were monster truck tires.
