Maybe look for one slightly used? This problem may have solved itself. Lead times on teardrops from all the popular companies are at least 12-18 months out. I can't plunk down $25K+ on something, sight unseen, and not have it for that long. Then, I'll have to go get it (CO, UT), no delivery and no local dealers. Argh...
Maybe I'll build one... yeah right.
I'm not sure about the teardrop market but in general in the travel trailer market they depreciate like mad the first couple years. Plus the brand new ones tend to have issues - they get covered under warranty but people often lose some of their first year with a new trailer dealing with stuff that ain't quite right.
I bought my Lance (which is a step down from Airstream but well above Thor Industries quality) 3 years used, and it was solidly 40-45% off the (negotiated) price for a new one. Similar to the LC, if you figure you're going to beat on it anyway why not save some $ and stash that away for repairs or mods.
