Rivian R1S vs LC thoughts?

Would you trade in your Land Cruiser for a Rivian R1S/R1T?

The hyperbole goes both ways in these EV discussions on mud. EG If it doesn’t tow 20k lbs 500 miles across the Sahara and cannot be field repaired with a coat hanger or has any of them pesky computers it’s basically useless for any use case.
Yep. That must be why you can actually start a 200 with a dead starter in the field with a coat hanger…. 😊

Lol! After crawling around mine fishing the older starter out I’m still skeptical that it’s possible. The inner heat shield wraps around the front of the starter pretty good.

Just shuttled a buddy from a carmax (sold a car) to Rivian (truck) for pickup. Rode around a bit in it, it's ****ing awesome. I still am leery of button-less cars but they really did think of almost everything with those. They really learned a lot from Tesla of what not/to do. Hardware for the door handles, great storage, air-compressor access, fast as heck. Even the lights are growing on me (I hated them).

Slightly fun fact, the on board compressor for airing up / down is an ARB single

The headlights are the one thing I simply cannot get over. If I giant kid hand reached down out of the sky and started playing with a Rivian, my surprise meter wouldn't be that high.

Let’s see how it holds up. I suspect not that well.

I know everybody means well but it’s arrogant to the extreme to force your choices on or judge someone else for doing something different than you. This is a new technology its pretty close to meeting a lot of peoples needs, that doesn’t mean everybody should be using them.

Honestly I hear more people poopooing them for no reason at all. Even this thread leans that way... The "I don't think that car will hold up well" for literally no reason, the "what if your car runs out of batteries using it as a back up house battery" implying I'll die if that happens... Like we don't all have like 4 cars on this forum.

I've never seen anyone "force EVs" on anyone, just people crapping on them any time they are mentioned.

Literally no reason?

The company is almost out of money and there is no way this thing has gone through the durability testing that other companies put their cars through.

A motorized door to access the plug? Gimme a freaking break like that thing is gonna work caked in ice or dirt and mud after years of use.

This is nothing more than a status symbol that will be traded in at the end of its short useful life.

I know it’s 2023 but people need to be ok with others disagreeing with their point of view and not getting upset about it.

Thanks for proving my point. You can open the port manually. You could have looked that up and known it in like two seconds, but you already dont like it, so you make up issues that there are proven solutions for, even if its unconsciously.

Thanks for your feedback, dingledong. The Rivian is a piece of junk.

Literally 30 seconds of searching. Written by a snowflake no less!

Let’s see how it holds up. I suspect not that well.

We’ll see - I’ve been watching the owners forums closely and there have been a couple of early issues especially now that we had that crazy polar vortex.

Munroe live has done amazing tear downs of both the truck and SUV and they appear to be well made. There are some criticisms about the complexity of the frame (for example) but it’s likely due to not having the capital yet to scale a more specialized manufacturing process to support their engineering vision.

They’ve got a bumpy road ahead to scale past their measly 25k vehicles per quarter. However with 115k vehicle back order and 100k EDVs ordered by Amazon - they will not have any issue recapitalizing if they burn through the $13B they have on hand.

If they didn’t have a brand that has captured a valuable customer segment and demand for their product, I’d be inclined to agree with you but that not the case. There is huge money to be made and investors will keep pumping in startup capital. Tesla wrote the book on this.

A lot of folks in this thread seem to believe everything they read on the internet. Kinda frightening.

I’d wager most of us own our 200s partly because they are the most reliable vehicle made by the brand that arguably makes the longest lasting vehicles on the market, so that probably impacts our expectations. But companies like Hyundai have been doing it far longer than Tesla or rivian and even they can’t get some of the basics right.

Saying they won’t hold up well is a pretty fair judgement with things this complex, that companies with half a century of experience are still working to figure out.

Overall we need companies like rivian and Tesla to push the market in a direction companies as conservative as Toyota weren’t going voluntarily. But many of the critiques are justified.
