I can't wrap my head around it, and I don't know the details but what I know is that on Monday the 13th - David Smith aka @David70FJ40 (previously known as David1947) passed away.

He will be missed. Normally I'm pretty good with words but I'm having a lot of trouble with them right now.....

God Speed David...

I don't think I ever met David as he started right when I left but in the private messages we had he seemed like a straight shooting, all around good guy.

My heart goes out to his family during this time.

Edit I did meet him, thought so, I saw a picture with both of us in it.

Wow, David was a great guy. I was looking forward to seeing him at the next GAA auction. RIP David.

Tough to find the words to express this properly. David was a really good guy and he will definitely be missed. I messaged his daughter a little while ago. David’s wishes were to be cremated and have his ashes spread at URE. The family has requested ONSC to be involved in the memorial procession. Obviously once the Covid mess dies down they will make the plans. I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted on the plans so that as many that want to attend are able.

Man this sucks so bad. I’m gonna miss him. So Thankful I’m got to see him at Christmas and give him a big hug after the loss of his wife. David was a special guy to me. I sat and had some real conversations with him about life. RIP.

me too, man. The best talks.

He was an ornery bastard but he had earned that right. We had a great relationship and Sarah & I had been welcomed into his home. We kept in fairly close contact when my father was passing last year and he was upset, yet understood, that while he wanted to speak with a fellow veteran, who was a complete stranger, of his era that it just wasn’t in the cards. I think David was very much like my father in the way he raised his family but that remains to be seen as I’ve only met his kids once. His grandson, who he was extremely proud of, accompanied David to at least two ONSC events; we will possibly see him playing pro baseball one day, which will make David smile.

I was David’s first contact regarding coming to his first club event (the Barn). We’d only spoken on MUD but when he arrived that day he greeted me like a long lost friend. I think he honestly felt that way about most of us as he got to know us via the forum.

I will always remember how genuinely grateful he was the day that me and Forrest and the Rymer’s and (forgive me but I can’t recall who else) showed up one Saturday morning to help him swap in an H55. I don’t even know if anybody but me had met him before but that showed him what the heart of ONSC was, and he repeatedly told me how grateful he was for that day. He went on to befriend many of us as he came to meet us at various events.

The two of us shared a great time at the last Meet & Greet on a Saturday morning when he arrived at the barn to find it almost deserted. Sarah was asleep in the tent and I was preparing for a day at the URE range. He was so happy to be able to be a part of cooking for the club, and he made that known to me while we also discussed the rifle that I was cleaning...that he wanted to buy on the spot!

You will be missed, friend. Thank you for your service in the jungles of Vietnam and your willingness to accept strangers as friends when they proved themselves worthy to your standards. I am proud to have met that standard and to be associated with others who have, too.

Prayers for his family....very surprising....is this CORVID19 related? Met him once at a Christmas gathering.

RIP David. While I didn't know him well, I feel like I did through the forum and FB. Very sad - praying for the family.

I don't know what to say. My condolences to his family and friends. I talked to him several times and had great respect for him. He carried his picture album around to show old off-roading pictures. It was better than a phone, Every picture had a good story.

Rest well Dear David, you were as fine a gentleman as any i have ever known. you will surely be missed my friend......peace and prayers for the family.

I texted with Eric a few hours ago after learning of his passing and still can’t believe it. David and I met 4 years ago at a monthly meeting. We started a conversation that never stopped. Rest In Peace.

This is so hard to imagine. I always looked forward to seeing David at the Christmas parties and Meet and Greet and listening to his stories. I know that previously, he was under a lot of stress attending to his wife before her passing and at the last Christmas party I had a brief talk with David and his son. They both seemed relieved that she was in a better place and no longer suffering. While the mood was somber, David was looking forward to a brighter future. I enjoyed his spirit and eagerness to help and fully expected him to sign up for some exploration trips this year that he's been meaning to take with his 40. He will be surely missed.

Very saddened to hear of David’s passing. I just saw it on FB. Like others, I’ll miss seeing him at events and hearing his stories. His family will be in my thoughts. At least now he can be with his wife again in a better place.

RIP David.
