Hi Mike,
Is there a web link to the article?

Anyone else see the article in 4 Wheel Drive and Sport Utility magazine Sept 2010 on Erik Niemeyer's FJ40?

Nice and clean setup. Very shiny for a FJ40.

I missed the article, but I've seen Erik's 40 in person. It's pretty impressive, but I know he's invested a lot into making it a very nice rig.

It's a queen. Never seen the dirt. Probably runs from the rain.:flipoff2:

Wow, what a nice specimen. Have I met the owner before and does he take it out wheeling?

He has before, I posted some pics I think from around 2008 on a Puerco run, I can dig if you wish. Found them, just need to transfer them over. I'll work on that tomorrow, past my bed time for now.

If I don't do it now, I might forget or get to busy. Same truck right!

A couple more, I have a few others, all I gotta say: that was one pretty truck, hope to see it out again.

Nice rig and not-too-bad a write-up. But a few things sort of cracked me up.

1. Squeak free? That'll last until the first 20 miles on washboard. My truck used to be that way but after XX,XXX miles the springs now creak and pop just letting out the clutch at a stop sign. Normal wear. Hope Erik can ulitmately deal with that for the "rest of his life".
2. And the comment about Birfields "cracking" under severe scenarios. They don't so much crack as explode, usually in the worst case situation.
3. And the photo of the "metal" Warn hubs. Did they make any out of plastic?

This is in no way an offense to Erik who obviously decided on a really great selection of mods and paid for them to be done right. I'm just always surprised at how "journalists" don't quite get it right when they're not well-versed in the subject matter and seem to make stuff up or at least spin it to an uninformed audience.

Greg,
The author of that article is Harry Wagner and Harry knows his stuff. Harry has been out with our group a number of times and he is a nice guy with an outstanding mini. Harry is a professional photographer and journalist.

Please be respectful to others, especially those that are friends of HDC.

x2. I'll emphasize outstanding mini.

I suspect it really goes about like this: Warn advertises. Therefor any magazine that discussed in depth how much better the junkyard Aisin hubs are than even the Warn premium hubs would rather quickly lose a big advertiser. And frankly, any off road magazine that didn't have an ad from Warn would raise a big red flag for me (I like Warm products a lot, just not the hubs--not when we've got a better option available).

I don't like it either, but it is the way of the world.... I'm pretty sure nobody would want to read the magazine I'd write. I doubt the audience is there for that kind of inane diesel chatter. ;) At least it wasn't a silly write up about how the K&N air filter is a "mod," or how some new wheels add "attitude."

what engine does this 40 have?

Alright, alright, mea culpa. It's just that the handfull of times I've been quoted in the print media or on the radio 100% of the time there was a factual error. I still think the "metal" hub thing is funny.

You just keep getting yourself in deeper and deeper, don't you?

Warn makes at least 2 different styles, one with a plastic dial (top) and one with a brass-plated aluminum dial (bottom). The "metal" hubs from Warn carry a lifetime warranty.

Good news. My "premium" Warn hub leaks...

What's it leaking? My Aisin hubs 'leaked'. But technically, it was my axle seal that was leaking. The simple gasket on the face of the retainer ring doesn't do anything for gear oil.
