Other than the 12 holes, the rim is dead ringer for the older 15" steel cruiser wheels with 4 slots. Retro... yea or nay?

Are they steel? Also, are those 16"? But, yeah, they look kinda retro.

almost looks like that rim that usually comes with the undersized spare. So I guess it's right for tires :flipoff2: Hope it's not wet from a pooch.

Looks cool though :D

They are steel, made by Toyota. 17" diameter. It is the spare wheel from a Tundra. If you compare an undersize spare and the old cruiser wheels, they are built the same way. The design is an inexpensive way to produce a strong wheel... even from thin metal. Although this one is hefty for a spare, it not nearly as thick as the FZJ80 steelies. As mentioned above, the design may not require thick steel to maintain the structure.

I bet the backspacing is something crazy like 4.5" or even 4.75". I'm still awaiting 17" steel rims in a 8 or 9 inch width with 3.5" backspacing. Can't find them and I've yet to find a place that will build them.

Well it can't all be good, can it? It is 17 x 7.5". The bad - it has 5" back spacing compared to the 4.5" or 4.75"?? on the 8". The good and bad, it would be very easy to have the center cut from this wheel and moved in about .5" - .75". There are four 3" long welds securing the center the rim.

Brian, I had looked at the new Titan/Armada steel wheels as they have the proper bolt pattern are 17" x 7.5" and are dirt cheap as it is mandatory to slap some 24's on those vehicles immediately. Don't know the backspacing but it was for naught anyways since the center hole is too small! I haven't seen enough of those tundra spares floating around to make it worthwhile but they look pretty nice as a wheeling setup.

I can source out enough of the Tundra spare wheels, just not sure if now is the time. Baby, business... my current 36/12.5R16 swampers are almost new.

I've never been a huge fan of wheel spacers, though they would probably be cheaper. Hmmmmm....

Don't know anything about what they'd charge, but these guys will make custom wheels:
Stockton Wheel (this link takes you to their off-road wheel section, but they make other wheels as well.

Stockton is expensive. They quoted me 189/wheel unfinished for 16x8s with 3.25" backspacing.

There are other Toyota 17s readily available if you choose to go the spacer route. I just can't bring myself to do the spacer thing. I'm tooooooo nervous about losing a wheel at 80mph. If I was going to trailer the rig down the insterstate I could probably do it.

I guess if you're using one set of wheels/tires the spacers may be an issue as they'd see constant/continuous use. But if you've got more civil daily use tires on your stock wheels you can use them as your DD as I do, and then add the spacers and second set of wheels w/ agressive tires for wheeling. That way they are only on the truck for a short period of time. I got a set of spacers on the advice of Christo to run with stock rims so the tires will stuff into the wheel wells better and I have no complaints. It widens the stance 3" and with the amount of lift I'm running a 315 fits up in the wheel well much better than with out them. Of course I still think getting a set of black rockcrawlers with the right amount of backspacing would be better - no doubt about it. But I was able to get the spacers and second set of wheels much cheaper and I can use the spacers all the time for a wider stance if I choose. I'm not sure what the inherent risks of using the spacers are other than worrying about aluminum fatigue. Personally I think I'll rip a tire off the rim or suffer a high speed blow out before that spacer gave up the ghost.

also, PM me if anyone is looking for the spacers - eric from WA on the list turned me on to these guys (http://tinyurl.com/36tbu) and they were great to deal with. They also do custom wheels but are $$ as well.

Have you tried US Wheel? They don't do retail sales, but they will tell you if they can make what you want and give you the specs so you can order it through Summit Racing. I ordered one for a spare for my mini truck (to match the other 4). Steel wagon spoke wheel, 15x10 3.25" bs unpainted for $55 incl shipping.

they don't look retro to me, at least not like a 40 wheel

Whatever ... lets see pics of 'em on the rig dude !
