I have a Birdhead restored steering wheel from a 71-72 FJ40 for sale, along with restored center cap and horn hardware. Please PM me for additional details and pictures. I bought this stuff several years ago for $725, asking for $675 including shipping to lower 48.

Would this work with a 69 does anyone know?

Depends on the spline count. But I think it would. That looks really nice

Agreed, it does look really good. Now that you mention the spline count I think that is the difference in these things. Just can't remember what years have what. Hopefully someone will chime in.

Hope it works for you. It seems like there was a crossover in July 1969. After July 1969 was a 33 spline shaft which should work for this wheel (I am happy to count spines and confirm on my end).

If your rig was built before 7/1969 it seems you'd have 36 splines and unfortunately this wheel would not fit.

I defer to greater minds but used post #3 here as my source: Difference in FJ40 steering wheels ???? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/difference-in-fj40-steering-wheels.1055058/

I think the split was 7/69, pre 7/69 was 36 splines, post was 33 splines.

see microfiche in this post here:

Thanx for the info you guys....I'll have to pop mine off and count them up.

That will definitely get you to the right answer. The VIN number can also tell you roughly when the FJ40 was built. You'd be looking for the last 5 digits to be greater than 70705 for it to be built in/after July.

But I'd still check the spline count if it were me!

I defer to the center arm assembly, which changed at the same time. If you have the early bracket that tucks into the frame channel, the odds are that you have the 36spline box.

Well, I just checked it and I have 36 splines....bummer. I actually sent some pics to Jimmy to do mine awhile back, but I think after looking at it he came to the conclusion it was to far gone...lol.

Mark, was that when the pedestal mount changed also?
