The NV4500 has no problem with this 6bt it is a very solid and stout transmission. I am not sure what nv4500 it is but i am pretty sure its a dodge diesel style nv4500. If you ever go down this route and go with nv4500 make sure you get one from a diesel and not a gas engine i hear they have 2 different types of input shafts.

Ok, that's what I was planning on getting. BTW was any work done on the engine? I've got a lead on a nice 1st gen 6bt, and am probably going to do a rebuild on it.

No rebuild at all on this motor all stock only thing we have had rebuilt on it was the injector pump and not really a rebuild just a seal and gasket rebuild on it, it had a leak in one of the seals. No need for a performance build on the motor this thing has all the power in the world to move this rig in 5th gear going through the mountains at 80mph getting still close to 25mpg.

1st gen cummins is the best way to go, no electronics or computer to worry about only thing you need is fuel and power to the fuel cutoff solenoid to make this thing run. oh and a starter ;p

Yep, no electronics to fuss with is the way I want to do it. What injector are you running? The VE or the p7100? I wish it was easier to find the HD transmissions by me.

VE pump, P pumps came on the 94-first 1/2 98 5.9 if i remember right. P pump would be great but the VE i feel is all you really need to this setup and doing a conversion would be a pain.

The engine i'm looking at originally came with a VE, but he was planning on doing the swap to the p7100, I'm probably going to buy a VE, and maybe do the 3200 RPM spring kit. Are you running the stock turbo?

Before you do a spring kit try it with the stock setup might not even want to put a different spring kit into it. From all the times we took it off road the rig just crawls over everything never really having to give it any gas to get over stuff

I was thinking I might want the extra rpm for the highway, how easy is it to work on the engine while its in the truck? I always loved how accessible things were on the 2f. If its not too cramped I could always do it later.

the injector pump is actually pretty easy to get to while it is in the truck some of the stuff up front is kind of a pain becasus of the radiator

took us about an hour to pull the injector pump. Our top end speed is 70 on the dash but we also have 35 inch tires so i bet it is close to 85 - 90

You are running 35" tires right? I wanted to run some 37"s. I guess I will have to go over the numbers to see what I should run. I have a set of 60 and 62 axles so either way its not a big deal. The sweet spot on the 6BT for highway cruising is around 65@1800rpm right?

sounds about right we dont have a tac setup on the cruiser right now but on my dads dodge truck that is about right cruising rpm. If you put 37 on there you will have no problem running them with the 3.73 gears as it right now we can take off in 3rd gear if we wanted to lol

That's one of the reasons I want to put a cummins in my project truck. All that power, and close to twice the MPG. Plus its a diesel, which would also make it a self inspection in NJ. Did you gusset the axles or anything to beef them up to handle the weight of the 6BT?

I was planning on swapping in some 63" chevy springs, either 3/4 or 1 tons. So I know the suspension will be up to it. Just wanted to see if the axles could take it weight without bending. Thanks for all of the input, Its nice to talk to someone who has done this before.
