hey guys, the wife's gx has a slight radiator leak 140k miles, Lexus wants a fortune for the repair. I've done a search and noticed people buying a koyo replacement. Is it consensus that this is the way to go? Also are there any other parts or tips as to replacing. Maybe a diy thread. Also if somebody has done this repair recently where is the best place to purchase.

Thanks in advance
Steve

I went with OEM on mine when I replaced it a month or so ago. I get a steep discount through my local dealer though. We use aftermarket radiators from keystone all the time and never have had a problem before. Just pressure test your system when you are done and you should be fine. I can email you the step by step process to do it off of Alldata.

Koyo is good stuff. Check with HPS performance hose as they finalized a GX470 radiator hose kit.

Koyo is a very reputable brand know for quality parts. I would recommend getting a new cap when you replace the radiator. They are normally sold separately.

I chose to go with a Denso from rockauto.com for $149.79 You can also google a discount code for another 5% off. The replacement took about 35 minutes with an extra set of hands to maneuver the radiator out and back in.
More Information for DENSO 2213125

Are you going to use Toyota coolant or another brand?

I was gonna use Toyota brand. 35 mins? Some of the reports said it took 2 hours. Do you have any other tips as to what made your job go so fast. Was it hard to add new antifreeze and not get any air bubbles.?

I did my radiator right after replacing a front axle, so I didn't have to remove the skid plates. I also didn't reinstall the skids for a few days, to make sure everything with the axle and radiator was good to go. I've seen some people remove lots of things, like the fan and shroud to change a radiator, but its completely unnecessary. The only tools that really helped were a couple 12" socket extensions and a swivel head socket.

The only coolant that I lost was what came out of the radiator. I bought several gallons of coolant and only used one or two. I took short trips and checked the coolant level in the radiator and the overflow tank. Topped it off as needed. I only had to add a small amount of coolant one time. No burping, no bubbles, the coolant system's design will move the air to the highest point in the system, and as pressure builds push, it out to the overflow tank. The important thing is to keep the overflow tank filled because as the coolant temperature drops it will siphon coolant back into the radiator. If there is no coolant there it will pull air back in.

check out rock auto you can get the denso or other discussed brands on there.

FYI - I know this is an older thread but for future reference. I Just spoke to the parts guy at my closest dealership he confirmed Denso makes the radiator. It was I think in the $130s on Rock Auto when I just checked (July 2020).

I told him the online price and he marked everything down. Hoses, thermostat, radiator, fluid, and clamps. It will be here in a day from their warehouse vs waiting a week for online parts. Instead of $800+ it was $540 for everything "next day" so make sure you ask for a discount. Not bad and I'm sure I could get it all for 300ish gates hoses are $8, but I need it asap and all the auto stores has to order from out of state even.

My brother installed the Rock Auto 'Denso' radiator on his '06 GX a few years back, and the aluminum top strap (that goes from side to side across the top of the radiator) was a lot thinner than the OEM radiator, and it cracked in the middle. It doesn't seem to have affected the performance of the radiator, but not a good thing. YMMV, of course.

I just installed the Denso a few weeks ago from RA. I get stuff from them next day, so no real waiting. I compared it to the OEM I pulled out and it looked the same to me.

BTW, radiator swapped out too easy. Only special tool I had that would be a big help are extended reach hose clamp pliers. Filled it back up and bled it, really straightforward job.

Can anyone confirm if the Rock Auto Denzo radiator is the same one carried by other parts stores. The model numbers are different.

RockAuto has the correct part number on the Denso 221-3125
