i have bought a 85 fj60 and something happened to the crankshaft pulley either in transit or by the PO. it was just hanging off of the belt. it can't be reset with a new nut, so i bought an aftermarket one from man a fre. now i have to either have it put on or do it myself. i don't think i have the tools though. i think the nut would take a 24mm maybe? any suggestions?

thanks

Try a 46mm socket. Snap on part number IMM460 for a 1/2" drive impact socket. Why did the pulley 'fall off'? I would figure that out before I go too far with this...

Good luck!

good question. it didn't exactly fall off. it basically is "sheared" in half. 1/2 is still on the crankshaft and 1/2 was hanging from the belts. so i am not sure at this point how everything will be working, specifically if the crankshaft has any damage/issues.....

The three groove pulley on the FJ60s is two pieces riveted together. I had one come apart. The belt that's left is the AC belt. Before it came apart I had a sligth clicking noise that I could never figure out. If anyone out there has a mystery noise coming from the front pulley, I'd try loosening the belts and giving a good wiggle to see yours is loose. As for replacing it - its not too tough if you have a BIG breaker bar and the right size (46mm?) socket. The trick I've used is too rest the breaker bar against the frame and bump the starter. Its kind of dangerous but works well. I don't think the old pulley is repairable as welding it might toast the rubber in the harmonic balancer. You'll likely need to find a new used one. This is one of the sickly expensive parts to get from Toyota - something like $400.

Usually, if there is any real damage to the crank, the key that holds the balancer in place is damaged, sometimes dimaging the crank slot that the key sits in. If the key does not look damaged, and fits snuggly in its slot, I wouldn't worry about it.

So tell us what the key looks like.

from what i can tell the "key" on the crank itself looks ok, so i think it will work out.

by the way, i got the pulley w/ac groove from $275 w/shipping from man a fre. it took over 2 weeks to get it though.

worth the wait though, since the local toyota dealership quoted me over $500. big surprise.
