I'm looking at a local KZJ73 that has the 1KZ-T engine mated to a five speed manual transmission. I know the 1KZ-T is not a highly regarded engine here and I've never had a diesel and not knowledgeable on the workings.
I am very competent with gas engines and would prefer one.

Does the 1KZ-T use the same bellhousing, input shaft, etc. with the 1FZ engine?
Is the transmission geared differently inside?
Thanks
Mike

Don’t know the answers to your questions, but if you’re 1KZ-T is in good shape keep it.
Might be a bit tight to fit that big 1FZ into that engine bay. Don’t think anything off the KZ would fit behind the FZ except for maybe the transfer case. I have seen one or two examples of someone shoe horning a HZ or HD engine into a “light duty” (short nose) 70 series.

The 1KZ-T and 1FZ use different transmissions, input shafts, bell housings, etc. Nothing will be a direct bolt in, and the 1FZ would be quite a tight fit in a KZJ engine bay. Is the engine in question a 1KZ-T or 1KZ-TE? Neither engine is particularly bad, with some basic maintenance and upgrades they would be perfectly adequate and reliable, especially in a relatively light weight 73-series chassis.

Prado engine bays lend themselves nicely to V6 or V8 engines. So for capable gasser swap, look to 1UZFE/2UZFE, 5VZFE. Those are pretty much all better than a 1FZ anyhow.

1UZFE in one for example:

Thanks for the response Coldtaco, I appreciate it.

That's exactly the info I was needing @AirheadNut.
The first thread I read here regarding the 1KZ-T (which this truck has) warned of cylinder head issues and recommended buying a spare head.
I'm puzzled by the size issue, I looked at a 73 this morning that had a 1FZ from the factory. Unfortunately it was over-priced ($42,000) compared to others I've seen for sale and he didn't want to negotiate. It was also an import from Columbia with fresh paint. That's a red flag for me.
Thanks for the info.

If you find a lhd KZJ73 with the 1KZ-T ( not KZTE) then just run it as is . This is a great engine and the head issues happened long time ago on these and if you used the updated head it will be a thing of the past . I have a KZJ73 here and drive it more then my 1HZ and 1HDT powered cruisers .

There were certainly cylinder head issues, but not nearly as dramatic as with the earlier 2L-TE engine. If the cooling system is kept in good shape you should be just fine. The size issue between the light duty 73 (LJ and KZJ) and the heavy duty 73 (HZJ and FZJ) is due to the front clip being different. The light duty models have shorter fenders and engine bay since they only came with smaller 4-cylinder engines.

Thanks @joekatana.
This is supposed to be a 1KZ-T, is there an obvious/easy way to make the determination?

I grew up with these and most head issues happened before they reached 100 k km . If you drive it at highway speeds and it doesn’t get hot or consumes coolant you are good . These are fun engines and in combination with coil springs all around this is the most comfortable 7x you can pick .

Thanks @joekatana.

I'm a little late to the game here! The 1KZ-TE is the electronically controlled injector pump. The 1KZ-T is a purely mechanical pump. It will probably only have 1 wire going to it. I've never seen one in person. The 1KZ-TE will have at least 4 wires and connectors on it. It's dark and I'm too lazy to go count mine!
