Hi, I'm from Angola and new here. After a lots of searching and reading i cant find a solution for my 1kz.
After a failing turbo at 400.000km i rebuild the engine, everything stock, then i send the injectors and fuel pump to a shop to clean. They said the fuel pump was bad and changed the housing for one that i believe by the numbers is from a 3L.
Now i cant start the engine unless use brake cleaner, it fires at first shot of brake cleaner and idles fines but if i turn it off it will need the brake cleaner again.
The engine is a 1kz-t with a full manual pump, the one that the acelerator cable connect directly on the pump.
Any help will be apreciated

Best Regards

You have a fuel delivery problem. It runs when you manually put fuel in (brake cleaner). Have you verified fuel at the injectors? IE: crack the nuts holding the injector lines to the injectors - to bleed the air from the system, but more importantly to make sure fuel is reaching that far? If no fuel, make sure fuel is reaching the pump and work back from there. Isolate the problem area first, then troubleshoot and mitigate. Best of luck!

I had checked for air leak and cant see anything, all the gaskets from engine and pump and been replaced.

I have fuel at injectors, the car runs, but if i crack 1 line open no matter what cylinder the engine shut off. Wont hold Idle on 3 cylinders.

Does this pumps have some kind of starting mechanism?

best regards

Ok, so it sounds like you are a lot further now that it is running. Is there another reason you are wanting it to run on 3 cylinders? My 6 cylinder will run, but roughly with 5 out of 6 cylinders, so it is not too surprising that it will not on 3.

As for shut off, I am not familiar with the KZ engine, but there is likely a fuel cutoff solenoid on the fuel pump. Not sure what you mean exactly by "starting mechanism". Taken literally, that would simply be your starter, though that is not what I believe you are getting at. There are only 3 things necessary for a diesel engine to run: compression, air, and fuel delivered at the correct timing.

I reread your original post and I am gathering that you are having issues with fuel delivery at initial startup? Check the fuel cutoff soleniod for correct resistance values and funtionality, these should be in the FSM, if you do not have one, check under the resources tab on this site. Less likely (especially if this is happening right after it was running fine) could be if fuel is going back to the tank from the pump when it is not running, effectively evacuating fuel from the pump... this would indicate air getting into the system from somewhere as @coldtaco suggested above.

A quick test of the last scenario once the engine shuts down would be to prime until the primer is stiff and unchanging, then attempting a start test again. If the primer is always hard and stiff to pump, that would indicate fuel is in the filter/pump and rules that out.

Lastly - is the shop reputable that "cleaned injectors and pump, and changed the housing"? Did they bench test the pump and injectors and give you a report? IE: do we know the pump and injectors are operating within spec? Hope this helps...

Not sure how it works with a manual pump but I just had to have my ECU repaired. Seems like it’s a common issue on all the 1KZTE’s
