Is it possible to remove the side molding from a 2013 LC200? I know that some have painted over the chrome, but I'd like to remove the plastic moldings entirely, if possible.

they are removable but I heard that depending on your region you may find drill holes. I myself am planning to remove them and shave whatever I find under there soon once I get all my parts in.

I've seen the side mouldings as a separate part and I don't remember seeing any attachment mechanism other than tape which leads me to believe they should be easily removed.

If you're willing to take the chance, I'd suggest waiting until the weather is warmer, or warm up a piece of the side moulding with a hair dryer/heat gun and start sliding some dental floss behind it to separate it from the body. If all goes well, the moulding will simply come off. If not, then the dental floss will run into a fastener of some sort and prevent removal.

Keep us posted, I'd be interested in removing mine as well if it can be easily done.

Thanks for the comments. I might try the floss trick to see if it's attached with fasteners or tape, and report back.

I might be interested in those should you decide to remove them. Please let me know if your willing to sell them!

Thanks!

On my 13 the pieces actually slide around. And that is not only my truck. Taped on pieces don't slide. There are holes in the door and I think they are square. Don't let the moldings distract you. They become invisible in a month. And they do serve a purpose in urban settings.

From the part drawing, they appear to attach similarly to the panels that were on my 100 series...which involved BOTH foam tape AND square holes cut into the bodywork....meaning if you remove them, you'd have numerous square holes on your truck.

Your Toyota dealer could surely confirm (or dismiss) this...but I think you'll have holes in the metal.

did anyone remove the side molding and verify if there are indeed holes in the door after removal?

Most likely looks like this. Car wash got me, only brushless after that. 90.00 oem. If clipped like this thru the sheet metal...move onto a new idea.

I think there are holes under there. They make all sorts of Plastidip colors now, Id get the closest one to your vehicle color and tape off everything but the chrome part and just spray it. If it doesnt look right, peel it off.

damn these to hell.. I recently acquired a 2014 with these awful door side moldings thinking I could just floss them off... dealer confirmed there are holes in the doors to mount them... damn

I would pop them off, take them to a place and have them wrapped in either flat black or close to body color, then put back on.

Yes... that’s my plan

Do these “pop off” that easy with the tabs not breaking. Thinking about pulling them off and doing paint close to my factory back paint as possible.

Toyota generally uses replaceable tabs in situations like this. If they do break, just unclip and buy new tabs. (Edit: the part numbers are in the upper corner of the diagram posted above)

That said, I’d just vinyl wrap the chrome parts, or whole things. It’ll end up taking less time and less risk of messing stuff up, IMO. I plan to do this with the chrome on mine eventually.

I did it today on my 2013. I used a very thin plastic ruler to start the pull and gradually moved down the line by hand and pulled them all straight out. Didn’t even break any clips!

I plan on wrapping the doors from the holes down with this:

I’ll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.
