Ok, there are two bolts that hold the rag joint to the steering rod. i got one of them out, on the other one, i removed the nut and the sob just keeps spinning but won't come out. I hammered it, wd40ed it, this is really pissing me off cause this should not be hard. Any tricks??

IIRC, I took the 2 screws out that hold the 2 halves of rag joint together. They are parallel to the steering shaft. Then loosen the bolts that hold the steering column in and slide the column toward the seat and the rag joint will come apart into 2 pieces. Then you just remove and replace the part on the steering column (I think) and push it back in and tighten the bolts.

Oh, and there is a wire that goes between the 2 halves that is a ground connection for your horn. Make sure you attach that over one of the bolts.

HTH

You would think it's that easy, i am trying to remove the 2nd bolt but the sob won't slide out of the rubber on the rag.

Is a '79 different than a '78? Why bother to separate the thing? Just replace it all.

I replaced mine about 7 months ago, i ended up removing the steering column in order to separate it. Thanks guys.

I think they are the same...

When I bought my new "joint" it only came with one side of the assembly. That's why I seperated it instead of replacing the whole thing. Its worked fine since I replaced that part though, so I don't see any need to replace the whole thing.

fyi, the reason the bolt wouldn't slide out after i removed the nut is due to the fact that the sob had a hidden locking washer holding it in place. So i cut it with a wire cutter for future reasons in case i wanted to remove it again.
