Is there a trick to doing this? The damn thing spins and I can't get it off. I need to remove the pulley to get at the bolts attaching the power steering pump.

Put the belt back on. Grab the belt, hold it, and then wrench the nut off. Be careful not to misplace or lose the woodruff key, the the moonshaped piece that locks the pulley in place.

That's what I've been trying. Seems stuck and difficult to get good leverage. I'm assuming that the usual counter clockwise is the way it comes off?

Yes, CCW. If the pulley is slipping, then with the belt on push down halfway between the alternator and PS pump pulley while loosing the nut.
