I was able to hammer one drum loose but it took a while to do and I'm sure my neighbors would prefer a quieter method. Does anyone know the bolt size to use in conjuction with the threaded holes in the drum cover? Seems like this method would be a lot quicker too. They appear to be the original drums (85 FJ60).

Thanks.

I wanna say 8mm but not 100 percent positive. Use 2 screws, get them under some tension then give it a whack with the hammer.

M8 ,the ubiquitous bolt found everywhere on the cruiser. Using two bolts to extract the drum is the common method. If it's stuck, be sure the adjuster is loosened

Thanks for the answer. I suspected there's already a bolt that exists somewhere on the vehicle. Any ideas on such a bolt location?

Thanks.

Actually the bolt required to extract the drum needs to be longer than any of the bolts found on the cruiser. I think 2" is long enough. Any hardware store will have it

Did you back off the parking brake adjuster before you went to town with the hammer? I assume you did but figured I'd check. I think we used a couple of M8 bolts when we pulled mine off.

Do these trucks have the automatic adjusting parking brake like the 3rd gen 4runners?

M8x1.25 At least 60 mm fully threaded, but more like 80 and a 10.9 grade bolt or it'll break if the drum is tight and then you'll hate life. www.belmetric.com has them.

HOWEVER, not needed, as stated, if you back off the adjuster and gentle taps with a dead blow. If you hammer on the drum, good chance you cause damage. I've even seen them crack.

A quick trip to Autozone and $3 later I was able to easily pop the cover off using two M8 screws. Didn't even need to tap it with a hammer. I appreciate all of the feedback and ideas.

The tensioning bolt for the alternator (on a 60) works just fine. I've managed to do it with just the one bolt when desperate. Lots of unscrewing and screwing in first one side then the other.
