Hello All,

Great Forum! Been reading through for the past couple of months, ready for my first addition to the beauty.

Tried searching but couldn't find anything definitive, I'm hoping someone has experience with this:

2001 Japanese Spec Toyota Land Cruiser Cygnus with Navigation

I want to install a remote start and lock/unlock system. I got the car with 1 key (no remote) so unlocking/locking needs the key. Also, I live in a cold area so remote start is a must have for me.

I bought the Crimestopper RS4-G3 from the states - Amazon.com: Crimestopper RS4-G3 Remote Start System with Keyless Entry and Trunk Pop: Automotive

Anyone know where I can find a good installation guide for something like this? I don't have much experience working on cars and theres a serious lack of expertise where I'm currently staying. I think I'm better off trying or atleast supervising the project on my own. Any help is much appreciated.

Sounds like the key you have is a Valet key. If it's gray, then for sure it is.
First off, get onto eBay and start looking for a 3 button remote key WITH the chip in it. I've seen them for about USD$125.00. If you go to a dealer, at least in the US, it's around USD$350.00 for ONE key with chip, albeit, they will code it too. If you by it on eBay, they will give you instructions on how to do it. They say it's quite easy.
Other than that, I don't know anything about remote start and all that blingy type stuff...

Hope this helps mate.

Yeah the grey key is Valet, it won't open the glove box. If it's a black non-remote key it's still a master and can be used to reprogram other blank keys with a transponder.

To clarify (as far as I know, I'm not an expert in any way) - all keys (gray valet, black, black remote) have a transponder "chip" in them that communicates with the immobiliser. Then you have the remote key (mine is 2-button) that also does remote-locking.

The difficulty - if you want to stick with Toyota's system - is getting hold of a blank remote key with the remote circuitry. Also a warning on buying such blank keys off eBay or elsewhere, and I don't know if it's true or not, but I was told that Japanese spec remotes use a different frequency than US or UK. I was told "a UK remote which operate at 433MHz would not work as in Japan the remotes are 315MHz to my knowledge." I had the remote transmitter already just the outer case was broken and I got a cheap $10 replacement. But as you don't have the remote transmitter you're in a different and more difficult boat.

Not kowning where you're from cygnus, the eBay keys I mentioned were here in the U.S.A. and the sellers seemed VERY intent on customer satisfaction with warranties and the keys are all new.
Just be sure that the key is UN-CUT. I know that sounds like a no-brainer, but it seems some people try to sell pre-cut keys.

Thanks for the input guys. The key I received is black so I guess it is a master, just no remote. That's interesting about the different frequencies, i think you just saved me a couple hundred bucks! I guess I'll have to check eBay Japan. I'm in East Africa but the car is from Japan (my nav and all the buttons are in Japanese!!!)

Oh man, tell me about it. I have a fairly high end Japanese stereo/nav unit and all I can do is use the CD and radio... Where are you? I'm in Nairobi.
PS - For a replacement remote key the Toyota main dealer here quoted me US$ 626 with a 4-week wait time to import from Japan (!)

I'm in Arusha, just a couple hours away! $626!?!? That's nuts! If I could just get this remote start system with keyless entry installed, I'd be a happy camper. Don't need the stock remote.

I think you are confusing the TPMS frequencies.... 433/34MHz is used in the USA and 315MHz is the rest of the world.

Hi,
Literally have the same problem on the exact car!! 2001 Cygnus imported into UK. Did you ever get this issue sorted? I have an auto electrician who is fitting a universal keyless entry in a few days, but I would much rather have a remote key.

With a 2001 you should be able to program the keyless entry using the door lock on the drivers door. They are a couple of YouTube videos on how to do it. The trick is not to use the power switch but rather the manual lock switch. If the transponder thing is an issue the easiest thing to do is take the key you have. Get non transponder copies made where ever in Arusha (my guess is on the road out to the airport — toward the crater) and take the transponder key and zip tie it behind the ignition switch out of sight. Had to do that with my Mitsubishi Pajero IO when we lived in Dar.

cheers,
Chris

The auto electrician and I took most of the interior panels off to look for the wireless ecu, but it was nowhere to be found. He came to the conclusion that it was either never fitted or was removed. As the car had central locking anyway, we fitted a universal keyless entry kit from amazon. That was the quickest part of the whole process!! No more using the key to lock and unlock the car
