I never look at mileage ... ever . Who cares , it's a big ass SUV ; nuff said ;p

Didn't mean fuel mileage, I was talking about how many miles do you think you'll have on the tires before they wear out.

Dude,

This is the eternal debate: 4:56 vs 4:88s. Since you like "on roading" so much, you may like the engine rpm with 4:56 better than 4:88s. I'm at 2800 rpm at 80 mph with 4:56s and 315s. FYI. Unless you're doing most of your cruising at >5,000' elev, then you'll want 4:88s.

Just some food for thought.

I know you didn't mean fuel mileage, but for the record, since I swapped out my 285s for 315s, I've noticed slightly worse in-city driving mileage, but somewhat better on-highway driving mileage. City driving dropped by about 1/2 mpg while highway improved by 1 to 1.5 mpg.

To answer this question -- I would never know. The problem with estimating how many miles you'd get on a tire IF you wheel is that you have to estimate how many miles you burned off while trying to get over a particular obstacle.

When driving around town, there's relatively little wear on tires -- which is how we get 30k, 40k, or 50k from a set. But...how many potential miles of rubber did I burn off that one tire while it spun against a rock? 10 miles? 100 miles? I dunno...

On my set of 285s, I was just over 20k miles -- with about 30% or 40% usable tread left after 2 rubicon trips and 1 moab trip (and lots of spinning tires throughout those trips).
By usable tread, I mean usable for off-road. A MTR worn down to the nubs (while it might still be street-legal) is pretty useless off-road, IMHO.

37s work great under an 80. This 80 wheeled the Rubicon with loaded roof rack, 3 people, filled with gear and drove there and back 3 states away.

Amazing ground clearance, that 80 drove over every pumkin rock (on the same lines a tan fj60 with 35 MTRs hit the same rocks on the axles) still fit through the tight spots and made it out with only one small dent high on the rear side corner.

The 37s were very impressive

Top 5 (I couldn't come up with 10) reasons why I think T Y L E R shouldn’t got to 37s:
5 - you really doesn't need to given the amount of wheeling you do. 37s would be overkill. you can probably handle 99% of the trails you'd run with your 35. Unless you want to get into severe body-damage-potential trails and obstacles, 35s are where I think you'd want to be.

4 - you'd look WAY too poser with 37s on your pretty 80 and there are better ways to spend the $1,200 USD (whatever it translates to in loonies) -- like 4.88s (or 4.56 with that blower that you're going to want), lockers, etc.

3 - you'd have to lean down to the girl at the coffee shop drive-thru window -- she'd have to reach up through the window...she'd eventually get pissed off, and you'll start getting bad, adulterated coffee...not worth it.

2 - there's no way you're going to get that rig into your garage with 37s.

1 - it'll be too tall for your cat to jump up into...and what's the point in going on wheeling trips if you can't bring your cat?

Well, I figured just the opposite Landtank. Figure if he tries to fit 40's, he won't be able to turn and therefore can't get to Starbucks and therefore saves money which therefore means he can do this all the right way :flipoff2: :D

For those who haven't seen yet... Action Jackson is doing just that... 40's!!!!!!!

Jackson's rig is just friggin' rediculous. THose baby's have got to rub. I think he stated before that he's running 6 inch lift with 3 inch body lift. Impressive rig for sure.

Tyler go to Amando's Web site to see a crusier with 36 swampers on it. www.yourphoto.com. Look in the Curise Moab 2004 phots. Look at the fine 80's with 33, 35's having fun in moab, on page 21(cmo21) is my old truck with 36 swampers on 10 inch rims, 3.5 back spacing. This was with a 6 inch lift, a 4 inch rear bump stop drop in the rear, with nothing in front for extra bump stop. These pictures are at the golden crack, upper section. Swampers are not a daily driving tire, the suck for every thing but wheeling.
I would personally not run a 10 inch rim with 36 swampers and not expect to take off the fender flares with a 4 inch lift. I lost some height in the rear springs(settlement) and Had to put a small spacer to allow the swampers to work again with out taking the fender flares off.'
Darin in OZ loved to run the 36/13 swamper in OZ on the stock 8" rim but I can not remember what lift he was running.
Bias ply tires will flat spot in the morning, and rattle the truck to death for the first 15-20 minutes of driving until they warm up.
How much lift on the cruiser with 37's FJ40m4?
Pat Takish took a 80 wtih his custom 6 inch lift with 37's on it and it did great. His truck had 4.88 (i beleive) and a supercharger. What a great truck. Christo has some picutres on his web site of that trip and his truck. good luck on your choice, its only money. later robbie

The 80 with 37s above is Pat Takish's 80 (my previous post)

Just to clarify -- that is Pat's cruiser. That photo was taken on the first "80s on the 'con" trip.

robbie, is this you?

Is this robbie's rig?

Actually that was Pats 80 on Rubithon 2002, going down the Big Sluice.

Where is Pat these days? Is he still wheelin that sweet 80?

Yes that is one Pic of my old 94 that I wheeled the last few years. That Pic was taken on the Golden spike trail last year at Moab. The obstical is the Wedge on the Posion Spider section of the trail. Christo was having fun at my expence by making me feel like I was going to high in the front. It has the 36/13 swampers on steel rims with 3.5 back spacing on the rims. Truck has 6 in lift. It also made it up and down White Knuckle hill on the behind the rock trail, set up like it is. later robbie

My bad.
I don't think I've seen anything from Pat on any of 80s lists (here, 80scool).

You shouldn't go for 37's for the exact same reason why people were suggesting me to not go to 36's. From what I can tell from reading your profile it seems that your money could be used a lot better in other places like sliders, skid plates, lockers, winch, bumpers, etc. You and I both have real good tires that are good on and offroad and even though they might not look as bad ass as others they work well. And with the money that you use for body protection you can just slide over all obstacles that people with big tires roll over.

P.S. Plus you can get some better articulation with what you have now!

Glad to see that picture was of Pat on a different trip, as I did not see the tent on the roof rack that he had on the "80's on the Con" trip. The truck and driver combo was great to watch. The damage He took was greater on the trip in 03 with the 80's. He could not open the rear passenger door after going through the narrow section before VW rock, which I got hung up on. His 37's and lift combo got him over some things that I could not do with my 6 inch lift and 35's, some times tires do mater. later robbie
