Sucks man... at least you have a parts yard...

Aaahhhh, throw 4 oz of water glass in there and you'll be good. For a while.

Cothran how did you get your intake to look so damn good?

Thanks for the compliments. It just took a little time and a lot of simple green. The whole engine used to be disgusting. I wasn't going to take it apart though because it wasn't in the plans to rebuild the engine, but I couldn't have it looking the way it did when everything else looked so good. Here's a before:

I basically used simple green and foamy engine brite to degrease it, then wirewheeled as much as I could reach. I decided to go with Duplicolor Engine enamel (cast iron color) for the block, and Duplicolor high heat paint for the valve cover, water pump and intake. The silver color is the high heat aluminum and the exhast and side cover are high heat black. I just wirewheeled the valve cover and intake and cleaned up with simple green, then put a coat of the aluminum on them. It looks good, although the flash makes both the aluminum and cast iron look lighter/brighter than they actually are. By the way, I used Krylon Fusion for the plastic fan.

Couple more pictures - I'll sign up for ROTW when this gets done hopefully next summer.

That is sick!!!

IIRC, the plug in the back of the block is the cam plug - very specific size, hard to find.

Nope, cam plug is hidden in front of the bell housing, its smaller than the rest of em. The machine shop that worked on my engine left it out. I'm very glad I noticed when I installed the cam......

Heres a question though, if you look at the 2 frost plugs on the back of the engine, they are installed differently. The top one has the "cup" out and the bottom one has the "cup" facing in, the same way that Treeroot reinstalled his plug. Does anyone know if it make a difference? I have seen it done both ways and was wondering.

There are a couple different designs for core plugs. You've mentioned two of them. One is the "cup" that just gets driven into the hole. The other is a round piece of material with a slight crown in the middle, the one you mention that looks like the cup plug put in backwards. The crowned plug is put in with the crown out. The center of the crown is hit to seat the plug in position.

HTH,
Nick

Thanks for clearing that up. I was only familiar with the "crown" type.
