Just did the relay rod on a 60 and it came with the cotter key/pin NOT in the end of it.. Does one adjust or tighten the slot in the end until it is firm or what does one do? Any method to the madness?

Tighten all the way. Back off 1 turn to start. Shouldn’t have any play in it. Shouldn’t be too tight either.

I just had a few moments and started researching it in depth... Most say back off half a turn?

With the limited holes for the cotter pin, you’ll be somewhere between 1/2 and 1 turn. Mine are roughly 3/4 turn out.

Put your hand on the rod and have someone wiggle the steering wheel - adjust until you don't feel any play. Back off until the cotter pin will go through.

I like Spike Strip's method in reply #5. Backing off 1 full turn leaves too much play for my tastes.
