Getting ready to purchase a refrigerator/freezer for pig- what have you got? The good and bad?

I've got the 72 qt. National Luna....

No ice cubes, but two compartments and you decide frig. or freezer or both. Traveling deeper in the outback it got harder to find ice every other day without the hamburger floating.

What priorities to look for In refer!

-power consumption effects battery plan.
-capacity effects refer dimensions.

Consumption?
Check all the latest amp hour usage of refers. If you drive every day battery not to much to worry about. Sitting for days a different story. Either way I killed a group 31 deep cycle every year. My lithium lives on.

Size?
National Luna is the tall narrow variaty. Dometic and ARB are on the fatter side.
How many days do you want to be on the road without having to stop for groceries?

My Luna is a 52 liter and has always carried enough for 2 weeks. If you need a lot of beer instantly, a larger refer might be needed. I just replenish the beverages from the dry box each morning.

National Luna was designed for transport of medical supplies in Africa a long time ago. Mine takes a pretty good beating. Had a fan blade brake last trip but it kept on working. Ordered a new fan motor from Equipt 1. Got it quickly and installed myself. If I had passed through Utah on the way home, I could have fixed it there. Easy fix. My Luna “weekender” uses a bit more juice then I hoped. The other Lunas have a bit more insulation.

Dometic has been around a long time as well. I’ve had one since 1984. Its run on propane, 12v and 120 v and still work. Its a bit small for carrying food AND beverages. It actually came with an ice tray. Dometic has a great line of refers.

ARB exploded with a great line of refers about 20 years ago. Don’t quote me on that, it’s just that when I started my hunt 15 years ago they had a lot going on. At that time there weren’t that many brands available.

There are soooo many to chose from know it amazing.

Rememder, Unless you plan on going way off the grid for weeks, there are many grocery stores no matter where you go. I tend to like to bring foods from my neighborhood, always have frozen steaks and seafood in my tucker.

I think I have rambled enough on the subject

Happy shopping

My 50's box was cool, but ice lasted one day.

For us, stopping at stores while traveling/camping takes away from our get away time. Food and cold beverages for two people takes a lot space, so there's a toss up if you want to haul or buy along the way. We found more than once encountering dry counties or State run liquor stores (not on every corner), so hauling what you need has become our first thought. I do like the different baskets in the N. Luna. Ours has five of them which helps to keep everything organized.

On the other hand, I miss those young days of camping with packing as a side thought, just go and have fun, so what the hamburger is floating.

The first electric cooler with its own ice maker!
Just enough for cocktails after a day of running trails....
I think this is the one that @Laughingjackal scored at the outdoor expo - pricing was a bit less than they have listed.
The BT app is cool.

We got something similar from Iron Man. Similar size IIRC, and 2 compartments. You can have both compartments be fridge, one fridge/one freeze, or both be freezer. The coldest side always has to be the compressor side if that makes sense.

This company is run by 2 Cruiser Heads in the local chapter. This is the fridge I bought. It comes with its own battery and in fair weather will run for a few days keeping food around 34 degrees. It has a charging port on both sides and will charge off the wall, cigarette lighter, and solar panels. Comes with a free app that you can adjust the settings from your phone. I have had it about a year and I am happy with it.
