restore

an old buddy owned a 66 impala w/ a 283 ci,he commutes w/it every day about ten years back.he lost compression on 2 of the cylinders.he was able to make it home and check it out,did find only had 15 psi on 2 cylinders so he decided to experiment and drained all the oil and fill up the crank case w/ 4 cans (8 cyl can) of restore oil additive and added oil the rest.he let it run for about an hour he said, and decided to shut it off after nothing seems to happen.lo and behold the next day he fired it up and the engine seem to run a lot better.he took it to work that day and when he got home that evening the car runs as if nothing happened.i still don't believe all the b.s he is telling me to this day.:ban:

Try to do everything correctly anymore but man when I was younger!!!

-Shoelace throttle trick
-Used a star tire iron to remove a bent pushrod on a BBC
-Flashlights and red shop rags for tail lights after frying the loom
-Beer can and duct tape for a radiator hose repair, BTW fill w/beer
-Aluminium foil in place of blown fuse, AFTER short is fixed
-Chain wrapped around frame and trans/transfer adapter sinched down with a bolt when mounts blew

:hillbilly::hillbilly::hillbilly: I thinks thats enough for now

I've done the chain thing to hold down a broken motor mount. I don't consider that redneck, just expedient.

Mid 1980's----On my old VW bus, the heater valve cables had frozen in the tubes they run through under the car. Every fall I would crawl under the car and wire the valves on the manifold open with a coat hanger. Every spring, I would go under the car and remove the coat hanger and hammer the valves closed. I drove it like that for 6 years since I was dead broke and in school at the time.

One other time, I could not get 2 of the 5 lug nuts off to change the tire. I used an acetylene torch to cut off the lug nuts ruining the center of the wheel. I drove on 3 lugs for the next two years, and remounted a $10 retread on the damaged wheel.

I ran a wire in place of the fusable link on my 80 when I wrecked the FL installing a new battery. Then forgot about it and drove like that for a year. It's fixed now of course, but in 1999, I was not as savy.

Lost a belt in the GTO flying across MT. Made a temp belt with jumper cables. Worked well enough to keep the lights on till we got home.

Not quite, but close

Not sure if this qualifies as "Redneck Fixes" but I just replaced the air cleaner breather hose with about 2 1/2 feet of RV sewer line. The OEM stuff was disintegrating, and I had pulled off the plastic to see if I could find a match down at home depot, and remembered that I had a new unused dump hose that one end had been crushed. Lo and behold, it slid on the air cleaner perfectly. See picture. Need to replace the black zip tie with a wormscrew clamp, since the original one just didn't quite fit. Cheap and easy repair, and comes in a variety of non OEM colors.

BTW, the McGyver fix of using a Tin foil gum wrapper to make a good fuze connection works too ;)

Paperclip to the rescue

I had a paper clip get me home.....

Wasn't a Land Cruiser but could apply elsewhere.

66 Chevy PU, had the in dash ignition switch fail.
Dead truck....

Removed from the dash and unplugged the key portion from the wire harness. The wire harness (truck side) had the female side of spade type multi connection. Using the paper clip as jumper I isolated the ignition, starter and hot. Broke the paper clip into 2 U pieces. "Plugged in" one U piece with one leg in the hot and one leg in he ignition to complete the circuit and supply electricity to the ignition. Took the second piece and put one into the starter slot and could bend it to touch the hot, spinning the starter and once the truck started let go and it would spring back to an open position disengaging the starter.

Paperclip hotwired

The paper clip held up for a long drive home....

i tried aluminum foil once for my tail light fuse and damn near melted my entire fuse box.

At least you did not use a .22 Long bullet. :D

Hey an empty case will work fine....

Gota shoot it before you use it :D

Some times it pays not to clean out the truck:cool:

and like Mace said Fix the cause first or smell the smoke

About 5 years ago I put one of those metal flex-a-lite fans in my FJ40. Well... it liked to hit the lower radiator hose when crossed up.

Fix= a piece of sheet metal (2x3") bent around the hose and held on with a hoseclamp.

Its been on there for 5 years now :D
Never had it fail on me. makes a hell of a noise though.

Coca-cola makes great brake fluid!!

The tube from the exhaust to the EGR system on my FJ60 fell off, and when it warmed up the valve would open and I would have a massive vacume leak. I somehow got home by pulling the choke all the way out and only going 35. After a while I just bought a rubber stopper for 50 cents at a hardware store and shoved it into the pipe of the EGR. Problem fixed!
