During my time with my new 37x14.00x17 Bias Iroks and my 17x8 wheels, I realized that my old thought process was nil and void with 17” wheels… I used to run a wide tire on a narrow wheel as a “poor man’s beadlock”. This seemed to work well for me until this tire combo. I loved the traction the Iroks gave me, but you could tell that they wanted to be at a lower pressure and I lost a couple beads while playing.

The solution came when someone on another 4x4 forum that I frequent decided to start laser cutting DIY Beadlock rings. He was CAD designing them with whatever you wanted and selling the rings for a really good deal. I couldn’t stand it and asked him to cook up the design I’ve been wanting to run forever. Here is a pic of the CAD drawing that he sent me:

After I saw that, I knew that I had to have them! So I sold a few things and shuffled my budget a bit and ordered a set for my 17” wheels. If you don’t remember them, this is what they looked like when I bought them:

I’m sorry that I don’t have many build pics, but I was on a short time frame to get these done. I ended up buying all of the hardware, paint and silicon a little at a time and waited til I had a stretch to get them done. Here is the inner ring welded, smoothed and painted onto the wheel:

A pic of my redneck paint booth with the outer rings hanging:

Mock-up of what it will look like. The grade 8 hardware just set in for looks:

And how she looks on the 80:

This shot shows how much wider the tire looks with the extra inch of wheel. Because the tire is now bolted onto the face of the wheel, it makes the width more like 17x9 with the backspacing staying the same. I think it looks much meaner!

So there ya go! By the time you factor in all of the extra stuff (hardware, special valve stems, etc.) and your time, it’s probably cheaper just to buy some beadlocks. But then they wouldn’t have my screen name on them and I wouldn’t have the satifaction of knowing I welded them up myself! That coolness is worth it all in my opinion! I will get a full side shot when she is out of the shop…

Those look great, Chad!

Can you help an old fart trying to understand beadlocks? I know the basic concept, but how do they work if they only lock the outside bead? It would seem in an extreme case that you could break the inside bead, even while running beadlocks. Isn't it the sideways flex of the aired down tire what causes a bead to break? Seems like an extreme flex of the tire towards the outside edge could break that inside bead.

The bead is generally stressed on the outside, when the weight of the truck is leaning on it. The weight is rarely pulling against the inside bead.

There are double-beadlock wheels, but you rarely see them. Staun internal beadlocks and Hutchinson wheels http://www.rockmonsterwheels.com/products2.htm are two examples, but they don't use traditional beadlock rings. I think I have seen wheels with rings on both sides, but I'm not positive about that.

Correct! And you could run rings on either side for a double beadlock, but it would need to be 20's on a mini-truck for brake clearance! The H1 wheels are also a double beadlock and a very cool design, but very heavy. The tire and wheel combo I have now weigh in at around 100 lbs a corner.

Your right, Tom, I could pull the back bead off but I personally have never seen it happen. I know it has, it's just rare.

Well, from what I've heard, if anyone can do it, my money's on you:hillbilly:!
Edit: Oh and thanks, spike for the link! I need to do some reading on those Huchinsons. At first glance it looks interesting!

Mind if I ask how much they cost you

Not at all! Around $280 for the wheels, $225 for the beadlock rings, $100 in hardware, paint and silicon and probably $15 in gas and wire for the welder. This was for 4 wheels (I don't run a spare).

You know I'm going to try my hardest! :flipoff2:

Huchinsons are amazing wheels, but they are spendy. I would go with a Staun internal beadlock, personally. Especially after trying to torque all those darn bolts down!

Did you weld the inner ring to a conventional rim? I don't see any feature to center the tire on the added ring. Do the bolts locate as well as clamp the bead? What am I missing?

Thats blasphemy!!! LoL. I think thats how you spell it. Those look awesome. Do you mind sharing your source?

Ya... Hopefully it's not too hardcore for you 80 guys. :flipoff2:

Those kick arse!

Why thank you!

Careful with the overspray. You don't want to get any paint on your pristine truck. ;)

Ass...

Yes, the inner ring is welded to a conventional rim. There is no "feature" to center the tire... A measuring tape works well! Bolts don't locate anything. This is the way most beadlocks are.

I don't mind sharing but I doubt he would ship... The deal is only for people on Timbercrawler.com, which is a Pacific Northwest off-road forum. The guy who built them goes by BamBam. You can find a thread on the rings in the classified section. And just for fair warning, there is a parental advisory going into this forum for a reason! There really are no rules...
