red vs blue block for 13B-T

Red block alt is course spline and blue block is fine spline. I have also noticed a difference in the bellhousing brackets. So far, that is all I see, but I haven't cracked it open yet either.

I would not take that to the bank. Seen red blocks with fine spline. In fact...just about any alt I've seen off any 13BT is fine spline. And of course there is the internal regulator vs external regulator too. The 12HT's are even more confusing: Some are short fine spline, some are long fine spline and I've seen a few coarse spline as well. We've even got two vacuum pumps on the shelf from 12HT's that put out 50 amps. No mention of this in EPC and I did not believe it until our rebuilder ran one up on the test bench to show me. I gave up trying to make sense of Toyota's vacuum pump differences.

I was reading through this again and this explains something on my 3BII engine, it does not have the access cover, yet it has the 8 and 10mm bolts. So my 3BII must have the roller cam, I was really wondering what the heck when I noticed it did not have the cover.

So in addtion to the rotory pump, different exhaust manufold configuration, it also has roller cam.

Oh, I also have a blue block 13b-T and that does hav ethe access cover.

My 3BII is a 1989 as well as my 13B-T

Cheers,

Michael

Ya, as mentioned above...both my blue block 13BT's have the access cover and I know they are not roller cams. They are also sleeved.

Interesting info here .. thanks ..

Greg .. did you have pics of those 12H-T with coarse splines .. longs or shorts ?

I remember purchasing a set of EPC cd's shortly after posting that info in post #10, and ended up finding out a bit more about the 13BT.

It appears that after the 8/88 the B, 3B (know as the 3BII), 11B, 14B and 14BT used the roller camshaft (actually roller lifters) and non sleeved block - which can be identified by the lack of the removeable side cover.

The 13BT on the other hand carried on largely unchanged with the sleeved block and solid lifters (which required the side cover).

Thats why a 13BT and 3BII of the same vintage will have different blocks.
