Not a recommendation, but a true story. I bought an induction timing light from Sears in 1979 when I was in college and making a few $$ tuning VWs for other students. I have used it for years and years. Finally 2-3 years ago it would not work any more. I went back to Sears, and they are still selling the exact same model. I brought my 1979 model back, and they exchanged it for a new one. It is exactly the same down to the cord. It's like going back in time. It even has this great late 70s look with lots of Chrome, but it's solid an well made.

With that said, a timing light with variable advance is extremely useful, and a feature you should consider. Good ones are fairly expensive, but I used the $25 from Harbor Freight until I left it on the fender and drove off. It hit the street and that was the end of it.
