Recovery tally

so just for fun since i got a winch, i have been keeping track of how many vehicles i have recovered and i have another member of a gun forum who does some basic custom stickers. what I am planning with him is to have a line for toyota, ford, nissan etc, with tally marks for each recovery of the different makes. what i need help on is what the top line should say so people know why its tallied.

i was thinking something like "vehicles recovered" "vehicles rescued" or "crappy vehicles that got stuck and i recovered," what do you guys think and anyone have any other ideas? (i only say that last one because i rescued a toyota yaris in ruts that i dont like going through on 31s...and the ford that tried to pull out the yaris...) it will be going on my drivers side rear glass on a 60 series wagon so i have some room but shorter is better IMO

BTW my tally is Toyota 4, Ford 1, Nissan 1. as a new make, ill be adding to it and a tally. how about you guys?

Seriously? If you can remember how many rigs you have winched or pulled out of a stuck... or how many times you have been on the other end of it... you have not been doing this for very long.

If you want to limit the counts to the number of times the phone has rang in the middle of the night and it is someone's wife reporting them overdue because she knows that you will call the other guys and set out before light to find him and get him home.... or a buddy on a satphone stranded 50 miles from the road on the other side of a flooded river.... or the state troopers asking if you can round up your crew to help them look for a little kid who wandered off from his parents on the trail because the weather is about to ground their helicopter... running into someone who has been walking for two days after rolling their rig in the back country and helping them out... flying in parts in a super cub for an air drop... dragging a rig or two out from under the water after a fast river has claimed them

Those kind of stories are generally be worth keeping track to retell when you are sitting around the campfire. But stickers on the side of your rig, thinking that you are bragging because you were there when someone got stuck? Kinda highschool don't you think? And would actually serve more to make people think that you are likely new to the whole thing if you are keeping count of winch pulls and snatches.

(To a lot of us, the words "recovery" and rescue" usually imply a lot more than just getting someone unstuck from the mud.)

not everyone does search and rescue or has been offroading for a number of years. its something fun for me to do to my cruiser and to be honest i do not care what people think of it when seeing it; its not bragging to me its a reminder of what i have done. my rig is for hunting and fishing and i usually pull myself out since im usualy alone. i rarely have someone else with me on a forest service road and rarely run into other people. my point is i dont usually get the opportunity to pull people out so its neat for me and it still something im going to do.

also if you are saying someone is going to get butthurt over putting "recoveries" on the side of my rig with tally marks, i hardly see how i am disrespectful over a generic term; if thats what you are implying. im not running around with S&R tags all over my rig pretending to be something im not.

BTW i keep tally of all the birds i kill each season and same with other critters, except varmint control, because its something i like doing to know what i have accomplished. this year from sept to now im at a 60-70 birds last i checked mixed between a couple duck, quail and dove hunts. i would put the count on my gun but i would be out of room in the first year.

i also have plenty of good stories for the campfire. try getting shot at intentionally and hit on a waterfowl opener where everyone and their mother comes out. Dove opener is worse though...

Nope not butt hurt or upset or anything like that at all. I just think it's pretty silly and I am imagine that, other than high school kids, most other people will too when they see the stickers on your rig on the trail or on the road. If you get into keeping score that way then go for it.
You ask what people thought so I told you what I thought.

I figure if you can remember how many times you strung out the winch cable or unrolled the snatch strap you really haven't done it that much. Once you have you realize it's just part of off road travel and not really anything worth making a big deal about

On another note... I don't think we've ever given anyone as much ribbing as the guy with the stock Jeep who was stuck on the trail with a sticker on it that said Cruiser Eater across the windshield. We let my 14 year old daughter pull him out with her cruiser which was built 4 or 5 times as his would ever be.

I doubt that his buddies will ever let him live that down. It works the same way in reverse when your cruiser is stuck and someone else has to pull you out... and that will happen.

well, I am obviously not as experienced in wildcountry wheeling as Mark here (is anybody?), but since you did ask our opinion I will concur that this does not seem like such a great idea. If only because people will probably think you are a newbie at this and want to show off, which is not the best impression to project. At worst, you'll be stuck and an otherwise helpful traveller will laugh at your sticker and keep on his merry way leaving you there...

Okay.... I tried to stop myself, but I gotta ask... or maybe it is a challenge. Either way... if your sticker idea is meant as a reminder to yourself of all the good times and not for others... wouldn't the bathroom mirror be a better place to put them? You could start your day with a look at them and head to bed after a moment to recollect and recall as well.

Seriously, it works well... I have a number of personal reminders to myself scrawled across my bathroom mirror.


Or maybe the screen saver/background on your phone/computer?


No worries of anyone misinterpreting your reasons and attitudes this way. And that way the tally on your window of the mounting numbers of recoveries and rescues of all the unfortunates that you encounter will not obscure your vision and create a safety hazard. Of course if you made the stickers really really small then it might be a while before that was a concern.

If a personal reminder is really what it is about.

Wow.

Back to reality- put whatever you want on your rig. It's your rig. When I see a pair of trucknuts on a lifted pickup I first think the driver is a tool- then I remember I was young once. Don't take it all too seriously. I've already made that mistake.

One more tip- the more a soldier talks about combat, the less they've seen combat. So, in a way, Mr. Rescue is right...

well this thread has gone down in flames. if i came off as defensive im sorry. no im not trying to make it 6 inch lettering, it will be small, approximately 1 inch lettering or smaller because i will end up adding to it and no i dont want it as a huge "look at me tally" just something small. right now hes working on the "Drive a legend, Drive a Land Cruiser" logo for my back window so im not going to get around to this for a litle while.

im not taking it the wrong way, it is the internet after all. though i do like that idea better with the logos thanks for helping, and i do tally other people recovering me...only time ive been winched out was by an FJ40 in a mud pit after 3 hours before i got my winch this summer. i think adding the times ive been pulled is a great idea too.
ill prob add a line titled self recoveries, im gonna run out of space real quick for self recoveries though that number is already at 5. oh and i went fishing for my buddies 4runner again the other day so im at 5 yoters 1 ford, 1 nissan.

I understand what your thinking is on this, kinda' like stinceled bombs on the fueslage, of a B-17 or something. I've never liked the p*ss on (vehicle of your choice) stickers because I never know when I might need a jump, tow, etc. If you want to keep a tally of "extractions" maybe keep a little notebook in the glove box. Just my .02. I'm just glad to see someone from your neck of the woods that hunts!

i see your guys point there with people ignoring, but out here in our neck of the woods we dont get any of that attitude really since its a small town and everyone knows everyone else. if its a trail and 4x4 trip, then im not going alone.

and ya, been killin ducks off the delta here and there and got a coupe doves out of white slough this year on opener and didnt get shot h was good when i could hear pellets raining down on me... most of my hunting is up in Plumas county and the national forest. been dropping tons of quail. the population exploded this year so should be a good bobcat population in 2-3 seasons from the increased food. hit a nice cat this year while hounding and hes off to the taxidermist

The only way to do this properly is to have a simple decal that reads "Tug Jobs", with hashmarks below it. It's a conversation starter and not demeaning to anyone.

You really don't want to walk over to the guy in the jeep and ask him for a pull because your winch broke, and have him see "crappy jeeps I rescued" on the side of your rig...

You don't any need stickers to remember the best recoveries. I remember when 12 naked hippies pushed a VW camper with a couple with two teenage daughters up the back side of Hot Creek in Mono County. That woman was all over in her husband's ear about taking a wrong turn. He had to go though at least one gate to get in there.
