Recovery gear always on hand

What recovery gear do you always have in your rigs? I have pulled a few people out of the snow over the years, usually with my truck and a strap. What do you always have in your rig for daily driving? Assuming you have a winch, what’s in your grab bag?
 
I got the winch remote and tree saver in the driver door pocket, so if I have to keep my foot on the brake pedal or something on a steep hill the passenger doesn’t have to open the rear hatch so I eliminate or decrease a risk of sliding backwards over somebody. Mine is a manual BTW so it’s a bit different than putting in park

The rest is pretty common, straps, pulleys, shackles gloves
 
I bought a tool carrier that fits right next to the factory jack access door in the back which makes it all very portable. In this heavy duty carrier, I have;

3 shackles, 2x 50ft tow straps, tree saver, jumper cables, heavy steel pin-type tent stakes, snatch block, Master locks with keys attached, USA made bolt cutters, a small hack-saw and spare blade, trailer chain links, 10ft of chain, recovery hook, manual winch controller (*in case my wireless fob dies), crescent wrench, pliers, screwdrivers, spare lug nuts, and a few spare metric nuts and bolts of various common sizes.

Every part in there has a story behind it, and why I think it's worth dragging around the extra weight all the time. My rig is garaged, so if it was sitting outside, I would remove the recovery kit, which would be inconvenient. Think about stuff you've used on the trail, and that's what you should carry, and not much more.
 
Shovel, shovel , and another shovel.

3 or 4 steel shackles, 1-2 soft shackles, pulley, straps, tree saver, axe, hand saw, gloves, and don't forget the shovel!!!!
 
Just a megaphone to heckle everyone as I drive by...

...and shovels. Did anyone mention shovels?
 
I don't carry a shovel when DD.
I do carry kinetic rope, strap, soft and steel shackles, wireless winch remote and the wire cuz batteries die at the least convenient moment, gloves, high lift jack and it's accoutrements, tool box and I guess that's about it.
 
50’ of extra winch line, three soft shackles, a tree strap, two snatch blocks and gloves. Prob something else I’m forgetting but those are always in the tailgate storage.
 
My *daily* driving doesn't usually take me anywhere that the average soccer mom or visiting tourist doesn't go so my recovery gear that is always in the rig is basically just the stuff that I never take out since it does not take up too much room. Which really is more than I would ever expect to need in these type of situations. When I am in "daily driving mode" I do not anticipate anything more serious than someone who has slid into the ditch in the winter (or gone up an unplowed road in their rental), tried to turn around in what turns out to be a soft spot, needs a jump start or has had a break down in the roadway. The typical urban/suburban stuff

Fire extinguisher
Small sturdy shovel (small snow shovel in the winter months. In the winter my tire chains stay in the rig too.)
Folding hand saw
Road flares
Jumpstart box
Jumper cables
Two snatch blocks
Kinetic recovery strap (30 foot)
50 foot synthetic winch line extension
Two soft shackles
Three hard shackles
Work gloves
Flashlight
Small tarp
Pretty decent tool bag
Tire plug kit
More first aid kit than I need really.
I also always have a handheld ham in the rig as a mate to my mobile. I doubt I will ever need that in "daily driving" situations.

Of course the winch stays on the front of the rig full time too. And... where else would I keep my winch remote other than in the rig? 🤔

A cell phone which contains numbers of friends that I know will respond if *I*am the one that needs assistance. :frown:

A coke
A chocolate bar
A business card. ;)

My kit mirrors @Mark W's for the most part. Can't believe fire extinguisher isn't in all bags. Thank God I had mine when I did...would've undoubtedly lost the truck without it.

I keep an old army surplus bag full of all that stuff in anything I own with 4wd.
 
I have yet to need my extinguisher for my rig, but over the years I have been in the right place at the right time for a couple of other people. And I seen other rigs too involved to save. Seen what a Cruiser looks like after a fire burns itself out too. :( Watching a rig burn and not being able to do a damn thing is a terrible feeling. :(

I just keep it simple: MaxTrax, Hitchlink, 2 soft shackles, a hard shackle, a 30-ft recovery strap, tree saver, and a shovel.

That's because they're not in the bag. Ones strapped to the inside rear next to the jack storage, and the other is in the hollow between the ps door and rear heater.
 
Amazing how many people do not list a fire ext and first aid kit. Everything else is just in case.
 
as someone who has bought more than one burned up rig to part out i now keep more than one fire ext in the truck. one in the front and one in the back.
 
I'll be going this ^^^ route for the trail truck.

Forgot the 1st aid kit. It's there too. Won a nice one in a Pelican case at a raffle a couple years back - reminds me that it's about time to check and replace a few things in it.

what soft shackles are you using?
 
And what kinetic recovery straps are you using?
 
I kicked down for the 30' 3/4" Bubba Rope last year, I think it was $159. Some would say I should have gone with the 7/8" rope, but I think the 3/4" is sufficient. Plus, you have to stretch it to get the dynamic recovery effect. I haven't used it yet, so there's that. But I've convinced myself that it's an improvement over the strap due to extra stretch and pull strength. I carry that along with an old 30' recovery strap (and a shovel, shackles, gloves, extinguisher, first aid kit, tools, etc.)

Someone posted up here a couple days ago about the Colby emergency tire valves. I just bought a set of those and put them in with my trail tools.

I'd also say that a tire plug kit is a good thing to have. I haven't had to use one yet, but I have it in the truck in case I get a puncture and I don't want to put the spare on or I'm in a spot where swapping tires is going to be difficult.

I don't carry a Hi-Lift, but I do have the bottle jack and a winch, and some pieces of 4X4 to elevate the bottle jack if needed.

The OP asked what recovery gear people carry.

No doubt a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tools, tire patch kits, air compressor, and other emergency items are essential but do they really qualify as recovery items that the OP was asking about.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned things like a wool blanket, extra emergency clothes/jackets, and a surplus military sleeping bag in case you have to spend a cold night stranded somewhere. Or how about extra fuses and hardware? Don't forget the emergency seat belt cutter and glass breaker. Than there is the always important roll of toilet paper, a few mre's, and a water filter. Did I mention some sort of survival firearm? Than there is the emergency flares, flare gun, and flint striker if you ever need to start a fire. Also you always need some lights, including but not limited to a headlight, a handheld flashlight, and some sort of magnetic work light. And never forget a compass!!!!!

Funny thing is I am not joking, other than the flares I usually have most of these things in my rig whenever I hit the washboard.
