Technically your application should use a 27F on the right side and a 27 on the left side. The posts on both batteries shoud be on the side of the battery closest to the engine. So, you are batting .500.

Doh!

My only rebuttal is that I have a kill switch on the passenger side making the cabling on that side sufficiently long to accommodate batteries of the same type (27F).

As long as you don't short one out on the underside of the hood you are golden. I do strongly suggest that you cover BOTH ends of the battery-to-battery cable. Grounding either of those lugs inadvertently is bad news. IE the only terminal that does not need a cover is the one going to the chassis ground.:)

Okay. What exactly would happen if the posts kissed the hood? I do have hood insulation in place but I think I'd like the terminal/post covers. I'll have to see if I can find some black or gray colored ones.

The result would be the same as having a wrench hit the body while turning a terminal fastener. You short the battery terminals together and it tries to weld.

In other words lots of sparks and melted metal.

I've had an issue with my batteries where they started to weep fluid out very soon after purchase and continued to get worse. I've religiously monitored them for over charging and un-even discharge and they have always been within .2 volts of each other, so I don't think that is a problem. Both batteries work fine, hold a charge like new and do not show any signs of harm besides the constant leaking out of the caps. Was thinking that engine bay temps may be the issue? So not sure if it is a problem with the batteries, are there some that are specifically not good for 24v systems?

@Loober did you get the gassy batteries sorted? If the charging system is not the problem it seems that some batteries are gassier then others. I've got some Crown dual purpose 27 series batteries in my 80 and they are incredibly gassy. So much so I have to continually wipe down and have repainted the hold-downs a couple times. They have not gone through a lot of electrolyte but the weeping was bad enough I have recently tried Battery Equalizer as well as Water Miser vent caps. The issue appears dealt with. A buddy tried just the Battery Equalizer on his Crown DP batteries and will track through trips this year to see if just that solves it.

@Greg_B, I was having very similar gassing to what you describe, I had an equalizer installed from the get go, just recently after about 2 years and 10,000km of having the batteries, for the last two months I have not noticed any gassing, but it has been cold, so not sure if heat is a factor. I still think its due to poor battery quality. Heard good things about costco and their batteries, plus they have a 5 year no hassle warranty, going to go that route once these fully s*** the bed.

@Loober interesting you had that Battery Equalizer liquid installed in yours from the beginning and still had bad gassing?

I have the same dual purpose Crowns as Greg_B in my HDJ81 and have had the same issues with really bad gassing. We put the the Battery Equalizer stuff in them about a month ago, and at least so far the batteries are still nice and dry. It'd be nice if that did the job and the Water Miser caps aren't necessary.

I replaced the batteries in my BJ74 with DP Kirklands from Costco this past summer. So far they've been just fine, but they haven't had much of a workout other than starting the truck.

@bj70_guy oh i misunderstood what you mean by equalizer, I thought you mean the device that makes sure the batteries are charging/discharging evenly, like a vannguard. I have not tried putting the liquid in the batteries.
