Yeah, it's not perfect but I like the general idea... good starting point.

The one on the 80 was surprisingly stout even with the pins close to the pivot. We banged it out in a day and the following week I went on a 6000km road trip without any issues. The secret is strategically placed rubber bushings that compress when you swing the carrier into the up position. They get rid of the slop and eliminate unwanted movement.

I totally agree that having the latch or pin farther away from the pivots is the smarter way to go and we incorporated that into the 60 carrier. It all depends on your set up though.

So that red pin that sits about 2" above the pivot of the swingdown is all that holds it in place when up? That's good enough to keep the tire from moving around? I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out a way of putting together a swing-down that doesnt need a bracket welded to the tailgate or liftgate.

:edit: didn't see your response right there. Hmmmm...

This is one way:

Yeah, a guy back east on cK5 started that design. I recall watching it unfold. His anchor pins were even closer to his pivots than that one.
Notice that the vertical distance from the pivot to the 'anchor' still isn't very large. Binding the pivoting frame against a rubber bumper of some sort will reduce or eliminate any noise, but it still places a much larger shear load on the anchor pins or bolts than does darwink's later 60 version with it's much higher anchor point. If you have to have them low like that, go a little bigger on the anchor pins than on the pivots.

Yeah, the swing down turned out to be sturdy and it didnt rattle at all. It had a little bit of movement due to the bushings between the xmember and carrier and the bushings in the main pivots. You couldnt see the tire move or vibrate when driving and it never loosened up on me.

I think its got a lot to do with the fact that the tire/carrier ended up being perfectly balanced and the majority of the weight was centered over the pivots. The second version I did up to fit the 37 wasnt and ended up eating the bushings at the xmember. I would never attach a carrier to the body and have visions of bent and stretched body panels just thinking about it.

Your design will depend on your bumper situation. If its a minimal one like on my 80 and want youto keep it that way then a low profile carrier is the way to go. If you have something beefier like the my 60 you have more options.
