I think the subject of putting kids in seats that face the center, has been beaten to death on this fourm. All but a few knuckle heads agree that it is a VERY VERY BAD idea.

I totally agree. And have long ago come to the decision I will never get all 4 in the 40 with out buying a second one. Already ditched the stock fold down seats because of the safety factor.

Yup. Just put a TJ fold and tumble in my 40...and have two kids. NO more room.

I had an 80, wife wants another for the room factor...but we are done at 2 kids. I can't afford more rigs.

BTW, Mark, your local to me if you want to wheel hit me up. I'm also on timbercrawler.com, a local forum with runs on a weekly basis.

I'm in Jefferson.

Well good thing for me, my 40 is still completely in peices and is a bare frame so maybe I'll just have to stretch the frame for a bit more wheelbase and more room in the tub.

Not to rehash an old arguement but I can see how seats facing the center in a rig on the road isn't the best idea (even though that's how they came from the factory) but in a trail rig I don't see how it makes much difference.

3rd row dodge caravan seat...got mine for 30 bucks near new....if you want can email you pics...just pm me...

I am very pleased with the rear seat from a Saab 900 - sits on the wheel wells, storage underneath, fold and tumble hatchback style bolts to custom brackets on C pillar. Factory shoulder belts as well - all from junkyard for cheap

Here ya go -

MetalTech custom family cage is the key to the whole deal. I welded some 3/8" cold roll loops to the "C" pillar for the Saab factory hatchback latches to attach to. Slotted flat bar welded to the fender anchors the lower seat stud. You could probably make this more solid if you wanted the seats installed more permanently. I wanted to be able to get the back seat in and out in a few minutes.

The base is a diamond plate sheet bent and welded up to provide storage underneath and support for the seat base. The Saab factory foldout bracket would work with this type of thing. If you were looking to secure carseats you might want to do a little more work than what I have done to accomodate mostly intoxicated adults. If you want something really safe for kids, you shouldn't be modifying a 40 series to begin with. A 80 or 100 series is made for hauling kids straight from the factory...

These pics are from last year, never got around to posting them up. The "C" pillar has a bushing to accept the Saab factory seat belts and the factory latches are on cables that mount to the holes in the diamond plate platform that serves as bench seat support and storage compartment. If I ever finish my house, I will put drawer slides in the diamond plate compartment and seal it up a little better. This storage compartment is key to the whole setup. The factory bracket will mount to the front of the compartment and would allow for the factory action of the hatchback seats. I decided it would be just as easy to pull the seat out as it would to fold it up. Better for hauling cargo when it's only me.

This is not the most bulletproof 5 point harness setup but I don't intend to wheel that hard with passengers. The seat is designed to be removable and still allow for fairly comfortable accommodation for 3 adults. It is pretty straight but not that uncomfortable at all.

I have had 3 adults ride back there for day-long trips and no complaints. The most common suggestion for improvement is to add another grab bar below the top cage rail. The front seats fold and slide forward enough to allow fairly easy access.

I did modify the Saab seat base by cutting out the plywood bottom so the sides can ride on the fenders and the base sit on the diamond plate. The front seats mount to a home-built seat base and my gas tank is a MWMP aftermarket aux tank below the tub. This took quite a bit of modification but it works pretty well for my needs.

Thanks for the link jabxyz! I really like dudley's bench setup. Probably what I am going to go with. Thanks again! Mark.

I've seen Dudleys inperson and is a sweet set up. Drop him a line and he will give you all the details. Last time I was there he had an extra laying around so I grabbed it for my 78. Zang
