so my rear main seal is leaking and starting to get pretty bad. I really do not think I could fix it myself. I always see people reference how expensive it is to have it repaired. Around how much should i be prepared to pay if i have a reputible mechanic fix it cost? $1000 or more/less?? Probably not gonna fix soon but admittedly worried about it.

Being a member of UC has it's perks. One is you get 25% of parts from Ralph Hayes Toyota. The other which so few have come to realize is you get 25% off labor. That is a huge chunk.

I had the front and rear main done in the 80 seriers with them and it came out to be around 550 total plus I had them do a few other things.

Call them tell them who you are and get them to quote you. You can be in and out in a day or so.

I got a quote last year from RHT for about 750-800 to fix the rear main on my 62. Seems like alot, but for a 62, theres alot of stuff to drop down. Needless to say, after i heard the price, i decided it wasn't leaking that bad....

lol thanks guys. It usually doesnt leak that bad but i have had to drive it to work this week due to my car being in the shop. I noticed alot more oil than usual on the ground so it scared the @#$@ out of me. Will take a couple of months but i definitely will talk to ralph hayes about fixin it if i can get out under600 or so. Thanks guys!

FYI they did the timing belt on my wifes 1oo for about $600 ...... toyota dealer near me $1200

Make sure it's not your oil pan gasket.

If it is your rear main you should think about replacing your throw out bearing, pilot bearing and clutch while you are I'm there. On a 60 you need to drop your rear driveshaft, tranny and tcase which isn't hard but is heavy and then you will be looking at your clutch, pull it and there is your rear main. Get a couple of guys together and you can do it in a day. It is that hard bc I could do it.

I just had the rear main in my pickup replaced and the clutch at the same time. My clutch was so coated with oil that it saved my flywheel. Unless you have a spot larger than a tin can every night I would not worry about it too soon, just keep an eye on the oil leve and get a clutch done at same timel. I can say that the bottom of my trick and my driveway is much cleaner now. My clutch was past gone so I had all of it done when it was apart.

Good luck!

. i have been watching it. It leaves a spot on the ground around the size of a quarter so it is not major. I can just smell oil all the time and everything underneath is coated with it. I probably need new head gasket as well. I have had to drive the rig all this week while my commuter is in the shop. Today is last day to drive it to work though.

after replacing the tranny/TC by myself i'd have to say that $700-900 bucks would probably be a fair price to pay. I purchased a rear main seal when i swapped out the tranny but ended up not doing it because the clutch alignment tool i had was the wrong size. So long as buisness stays good i'll be pulling the engine out this fall anyway so i'll continue losing a pint of oil a month until then.

you can have the tranny/tc removed in less than an hour....the hard part is getting it back in. You have to hold your teeth just right.

I'm sure it would be a much easier job for a few guys that actually weigh more than the tranny/tc put together.

It is possible to put the clutch back together without the alignment tool. You just have to get it close. Once it almost in you have to use a prybar on the cluch fork to release the clutch to get it aligned. Not the best but will work.

i've installed them in FWD hondas many many times without the use of a guide tool however i can almost one hand a B series honda tranny.

Should i have had help here at the shop where i wouldn't have minded raising the tranny up/down a few times until i got it lined up right i would have done it.

With my luck i would have spent an extra two hours fighting with just to find the seal was not leaking and it was the freeze plug.
