Hi all, first post and new (to me) GX owner. 07, non-nav with great maintenance records and all. Rides great and all that, but was cleaning up some really small residual oil when I was underneath the truck today. Right on the main seal, not enough to make a drip, but noticed it wet when I wiped with a paper towel.

I did a quick look at the valve cover bolts and didn't notice any oil up top, but would I be able to tell without removing the entire gasket? I don't smell oil when it's running.

I did notice there were two empty screw holes in the main seal and just wanted to check that was by design or am I missing them? If there should be bolts there, any ideas on size/length? I'm not great with cars, but it's fun learning for sure. Pics attached.

Thanks!

I don’t know the 4.7 very well, but I think that’s the bell housing. The main seal is in the middle of that thing where the crankshaft mates to the rear of the block. You can’t get to it without separating the engine from the tranny. Those two bolts are probably in front the backside but a 4.7L guy could better confirm. Either way, those bolts are holding the engine to the tranny and there is no fluid passed between the two so sticking bolts in there won’t stop your leak. If it’s a seep and not a drip, I’d just check the oil every fill up and keep an eye on it. Rear main seal is the hardest seal to change on the truck to my knowledge. Could also be the rear camshaft seals up top near the firewall. You’d probably have a lot more though if it were coming from up top. I just did all the camshaft seals and valve covers on my 3rd gen and it was a mess underneath.

Also… most Toyota dealers will go through the entire truck and tell you everything that is wrong from spec for about $100. I’d do that and then start your list of todo’s based on severity. They always sell them for a reason and they’re never caught up on maintenance…. Unless I have a heart attack and my wife sells you my truck, but I eat pretty healthy ; )

Haha I'll keep an eye out for yours! Thanks for the tip on the $100 inspection. Didn't know about that, sounds like money well spent!
