rear hatch won't open

I've had some previous issues with the power lock not working to unlock my rear hatch, but now even when I try to use the key I cannot unlock the rear hatch to open it up. I even tried going through on the inside and that doesn't open it up either. The lock button from the inside pretty much moves freely up and down and doesn't feel like its attached to anything. Any ideas on whats wrong and what I'd need to fix/replace?

I had a similar problem on my 96, but I could open it from inside. Basically, a plastic clip had broken.

You can take the peice of trim off from the inside and get at the mechanism to open it.

alright, so upon further examination the linkage from the exterior handle to the locking mechanism has broken. The tip of that rod broke. There is a little yellow plastic piece on the end of the rod that has snapped. How do I go about getting this piece. Would I need to buy a new rear hatch handle or what because it's the rod piece that attaches to that handle that has broken.

Did the metal rod break? If it is just the plastic piece, same piece that broke for me, went to the Toyota dealer, they had it in stock and was very inexpensive.

If it's the rod, not sure if you need the hole assembly. If you do get it priced and if its expensive, might consider getting one from the vehicles being parted out in the for sale section

Thank you for posting the part number. The dealership told me they can't source the clip and wanted $42 for the entire part with clip. I found it for $1.33 online, be here next week.

Question is this the only place this part is used or is it used in other areas?

So this same little yellow plastic piece for the latch broke again, but now it's discontinued. Are there any generic pieces that anyone has found that fit the rod connected to the rear hatch handle?

I used some safety wire and made a loop that hung down that I could pull to open the tail. (It hung down above the license plate) probably could have attacked it to the handle
