Im adding the oem deflector to my FZJ80 hatch that doesnt have one....yep, I've searched the pros and cons. Can someone provide me the distance from the hatch top lip to the upper mount hole centers?
I was going to just "wing" it but on second thought, why not see where the oem holes are. Thanks!

There aren't OEM holes, the deflector was a port-installed option. Our truck is "clean" up there (as I suspect yours is), never a deflector on it.

That said, you're asking mostly the right question, because you need to drill the holes where they need to be and not hit anything vital.

remove roof inner liner and look for a space where it can best come through. i rememeber on my surf (4runner) you could have easily determined the location by looking under roof as the space was easily identified

Raise the hatch to it's highest point, then set the deflector on the roof and mark holes so you have clearance.

I have done the McMaster Carr hatch strut replacement that raises the hatch higher than stock, and my deflector just barely clears my roof when fully open. Factory open is slightly above horizontal. The mod is pointing up about 15 degrees.

Not exactly what you asked for, but here's the distance from top lip of hatch to top of mounting bracket. You can see there is about 1/8" difference from side to side which I'll attribute to a sloppy port install! HTH

Or as I look at my own pictures, part of the 'slop' could be in the fact I measured from different points (center vs edge) of the mounting bracket...

Why would you do that to a perfectly good hatch. I went out of my way to remove my wing, roof rack and even welded up my sunroof.

Erie, PA: geographic center of the US Rust Belt. No way would I drill holes
into a perfectly good rear hatch. If the OP really wants a wind/dust deflector
I would suggest one of the higher strength double sided tapes using the original mounts which pretty much follow the curve of the sheet metal. Just need to pick a thicker double sided tape, maybe also fill in the mounting bracket screw holes with something black.
