I got all of my emblems off with fishin line and a hair dryer but how do I get the sombrero off? Mines a 2000 model and I'm getting rid of the gold and plannin on painting gun metal.

If you remove the toyota sombrero you will have two holes in the tailgate that you will need to fill. I am not sure if there are screws on the backside that hold it in place but it definitely has two pins that go through the tail gate.

I'm wantin to paint it and put it back on with 3m adhesive product. Wouldn't this cover the holes?

Does the emblem pop off if I pry under it?

hair dryer and dental floss. Goo gone the residue and re-apply with 3M emblem tape. It has 2 pins on the back, no screws.

With mine (2002), I just pulled it off. I think it has two tabs on it that fit into holes on the rear hatch sheet metal. I was getting rid of my gold emblems and replacing them with chrome as that was all that I could source. I really wanted Toyota black pearl but they were no where to be found. Shortly afterwards, I ended up using Plasti-Dip on them. If I had it to do all over again, I would have just Plasti-Dipped my gold emblems. No emblem removal, takes about 1 hour (mostly waiting for it to dry), holds up well and it looks great.

Second on the platidip idea, seems to work great and the removal and reinstall is a PITA for something so inherently cosmetic. One of the reasons I had my hatch repainted was because of the hash job I did on the reinstall of the emblems etc. (and I did not even care if they went in the right places, just wanted to put them somewhere on the truck) the emblem adhesive I used was pro quality, but came out messy and the whole job just annoyed me. Of course, given the laws of the universe, once I got everything looking good again I backed my truck up into my house and f-ed up the bottom half of the newly fixed hatch. Go with the plastidip, if you don;t like it you can peel it off and do it the hard way, youll be out $20.

Will the floss cut thru the pins? Or does the heat help to pop them out?

I used goo gone 20 times on it last night and the left over residue on mine is some tenacious stuff.

I've used fish line and dental floss but have found a thin credit card (more like a grocery club card) works much better.

Work it under a corner and then use a sawing motion. It won't hurt the pins or your paint.

Hair dryer really helps the process.

Never thought of a club card. Good thinking.

Thanks a lot guys - Will try this tonight.

I did this last year. If I didn't have to swap in a new rear hatch, I would have just Plastidipped the emblems while they were on. The replacement hatch's emblems were in bad shape.

This pic shows the pins behind the sombrero and application of the 3M tape.
Hope this helps.

To make this a Zombie thread, has anyone tried putting on the 60 emblem in place of the same one on the rear hatch on a 98-2002 100?
Assume its not too wide for that strip the current emblem sits on
