2 years ago, I did the rear brake job on my 1971 fj40. After it was done, I noticed a small binding but was hoping for the shoes to wear. Fast forward 2 year with not a lot of time to use the cruiser ( moving , house repairs...) I decided to fix the problem since I had the feeling it was binding more, when I was in reverse. After loosing the shoes, I realized that the binding was between the drum and the packplate  The problem starts when the wheel nuts are tight?? Am I stupid? Am I missing something?? probably both  BTW all the parts for the brake job was from my Toyota dealer...

thanks

So the rear drums are hitting the backing plates? The backing plates are bent or you have installed the wrong drums. Take it apart and see exactly what's rubbing.

How about some pictures?

Howdy! When you did the brake job, did you have the drums turned down? They could be out of round a bit. Sometimes due to overheating, old age, or getting too thin from being turned down too many times. There is a minimum tolerance stamped onto the drums. John

Good news! I went to take the pictures and I foud out that 1 of my drums was out of round! I had another pair in the garage so..... problem solved! . This makes me remember that I have to do a 4 wheel disk conversion :hhmm: when I have enough cruiser money :bounce:

Thanks for your help!

Howdy! BTDT!! I have even had a bent axle shaft that was just enough off that one edge of the drum rubbed on the inside edge of both shoes. I actually made a shim to go between the drum and the axle flange to get me thru until I could scrounge a better drum. I have my brackets for the disc conversion, but I want to do Poly Performance axles at the same time, so the $$$ ain't here yet. John

Same problem here.... not enough money to do the front disk conversion BEFORE I can even think of doing the rear disk conversion
