Yes sure the rear wheel does protude like that so I've got a ff and I can do vk7s conversion. Feel like such a dummy :o

Chassis wise they are pretty good my landscaping work is dying off now so will have new year into January on my trucks. Doing a cab swap on my other hilux then breaking the donor hilux then will make a start on the LCs.

Will be sorting out disc conversion components soon if you're interested sure it was you who mentioned it in an earlier post.

Cheers
You need to look at Vk7ybi writeup again , because I don't think you have the same backing plates on your rear axles.
His have the 8 holes and yours have only 4. Judging from your pics, but my sight is not that good, sometimes.
Also your rear drums setup is far more superior than the Hilux drum setup IMHO.

can't get my head round that word mini, but I suppose by US standards my lux is a mini

Maybe this picture of my American truck will help. 7 metres of love...

That could be true. Usual reason the disc alternative is of interest in the UK is the MUD and water we live with, otherwise I think I would be 100% happy with the drums.

No FF on my trucks so I would have to fab a bracket, too much other stuff to do at the moment but one day perhaps..

I must point out that the writeup is not mine, I just used it to demonstrate what I have done to mine.. You must have the earlier FF housing with the 8 bolt backing plate pattern, as its the same as the front spindle pattern.. A 4 bolt setup can work hilux calipers with custom brackets, but you dont get the disc brake backing plate/dust shield.. Some dont like them and remove them anyway.. Check Watrob's build thread, he has pictures of the brackets there I think..

You can use late 70 series prado / 90 colorado rear discs, they will fit right over the rear hubs. They are vented so you you'll have to find some big calipers from them, maybe some citroen BX or xantia fronts will work, those have an incorporated e-brake mechanism.

Would you happen to know of or have a good buck for a mk2 hilux btw ? :D

Will post pics soon as

Thanks for the info on calipers

Recently ebay'd a smart mk2 I've got 2 mk3 butts that will fit although they're a little wider than the original and built a little better.

I'm in England so postage may be a problem unless you're a local :)

I'm not exactly local but there's just a small sea "sleeve" between us :D
I really want a mk2 for the all-original full resto I'm doing. Passion Technique : Préparation, Equipements, Accessoires et Pièces détachées
Please let me know if you come across something, that's the last big thing I need before completion. :grinpimp:

Excellent work there, my last rebuild wasn't near as thorough. France ain't that far away whatever you need get in touch I've got lots of Hilux stuff will keep you posted if a decent MK2 butt turns up.

My local 4x4 shop tells me that there is a big following in France for the fj40 cruiser range and told me about a magazine called TLC where french parts supplier(s) advertise I've found the mag online however my French is next to non existant. Do you know of any suppliers over there who can lend an ear to a poor unfortunate Englishman??

hilux post a pic of the outside of your rear wheel or the centre of the rear diff housing.

That rear axle on the trolley looks to be SF.

The axle on the trolley is off a hilux/minitruck

First 2 are the 45

Sorry to resurect an oldie but goodie thread but it came up as I was doing research into doing a rear disc converion on my 1980 BJ40 with a full floater rear axle. Given that where I am GM parts are not plentiful or cheap I was interested in a Toyota based option for the swap. It seems that you two guys have used either hilux or prado rear disc rotors on a 40 series FFloater, is that correct? If so what year hilux or prado raotors did you use? Where did you source the brackets? What calipers did you use and would they work with the 15" wheels that I'm running now? Sorry, lot's of questions.
Thanks,
John

Correct.. I use the rotors with the 8 holes, 6 for wheel studs and two for retaining bolts.. I believe from a mids 80s, perhaps 84. The bracket for the caliper I manufactured from an old front swival housing, as detailed previous.. Yours being an 80 model probably wont have the correct backing plate pattern to be able to do this.. I used hilux front calipers with hilux rotors, but there is no reason you cant use cruiser parts.. This setup works with 15 inch wheels..

Thanks for getting back so fast this is really helpful.Ok, Just to be clear I have a 40 series, BJ40, in fact made in 1980. If I get this correct I can do a rear disc brake swap on my full floater rear axle with the following rough parts list:

Master cylinder - 80 series with 4 disc brakes
Booster - 80 series
Rotors - Mid '80s Hilux 8 hole pattern,
6 for wheel studs, 2 for
retaining bolts
Calipers - Mid '80s Hilux front calipers
Brackets _ Fabbed from Mid '80s 60 or mini truck (Hilux?)steering knuckle housings

Is there any other source for the bracket/backing plate or will it have to be fabbed? Otherwise does this list look right? Thanks again for getting back so fast,
John

You will likely have to have custom brackets made, I dont think the 80 model rear FF housing has the same backing plate pattern as the front. I know of maufacturers here in Aus that do brackets, but cant suggest any for where you are.

Otherwise, this looks pretty good..

I used a dual diaphram booster and 15/16 master from a factory front disc 40, this works well for me. I'd only try to adapt 80 parts if I couldnt find any 40 parts.
