So I did something stupid that I will not admit to publicly and really messed up my rear diff… anyway… I’m pretty sure the pinion itself is shot… I have not yet opened it up.. but based on the god awful grinding sound and the 1-1.25 of play out the front of the diff I’d say it’s all in bad shape in there… plan on opening it up this weekend.

My question is does anyone know of a drop in third member or of a shop that I can ship this thing off to be rebuilt… I’m in WA.. but
don’t mind shipping it..
Or maybe a 75 rear axle assembly for sale since I’m going to a disc conversion any way…
Pic below for reference… Thank you all in advance..

I have a rear 3rd member from our 1970 that you can have for free but the cost of shipping it to you would probably not be feasible.

It is probably cheaper then him shipping his twice and having to buy a bunch of parts for it!
Hopefully the one I built for you is still running good.

You built one for Green Bean… are you up for building another?

Sure, with the upfront disclosure that we are backlogged for several weeks on component rebuilds (differentials, transmission/transfer, steering gear), and there may be closer options to you such as Torfab?

I understand that believe me. I forgot about Torfab.. I thought they mostly did bolt aftermarket stuff. I will reach out to them and see what they say. Then get back with you. I did roll through some of your old posts and saw a bunch of parts listings though… any chance there is a compatible axle housing hanging around your shop?

@cruiseroutfit did a couple for me. good price and i shipped it a 5 gallon bucket. it was still cheaper to ship from canada than to get a local shop to build it. now that was a few years ago and shipping is prohibitively expensive now compared to then so might not be worth it but they are great.
I was able to find a private seller in SLC that had an 80 rear diff for sale. He dropped it at @cruiseroutfit and they put a arb in it and shipped up to me in Idaho. Good deal all the way around. Worth a shot.

Where abouts in WA? I just had my diff rebuilt at a great shop near Tacoma (Port Orchard). Its called Rears & Gears and the owners name is John. I simply delivered my 3rd...and had it back in a week. Everything goes into their parts washer, new bearings, etc..they paint the housing (por-15 I think)...looked like new. They cleaned up some small pitting on both axels. Really happy with how it all turned out.

OH, before tax it was a little under $750 which I thought was reasonable. I considered doing it myself but the rebuild kits are $300 and I would have needed to buy a decent meter to set the backlash etc...

I’m in central WA. Tacoma’s not too far. Thank you!
