I always found it curious how Toyota had various arrangements of "Tail Lights/Turn Signals/Backup Lights/Brake Lights" on the rear quarter panels and rear bumper for the 70 series. My particular year (1989) had, in my opinion, the strangest setup. Right Rear Qtr Lt only had the Reverse Light, and Left Rear had a Brake Light and a Reverse Light. I thought it would be an upgraded look to have Brake Lights on both sides and make use of all available space. I have my work cutout for me since the PO did a hack job installing an outlet for a trailer hitch.

I bought what I thought was the correct item from Toyota, but the Rim/Frame is 1/2" or 12mm smaller than the old. one in the first picture. The new item is slightly smaller and has no curvature like the pre-1990 item. So I am trying to track down the 1989 item.

It appears If I detach the frame from the new item, the internals will fit inside the old beat up frame/rim.

Well, amazingly the dimensions of the internal lens assembly haven't changed between the years. The old frames/rims look like a$$, but will have to due till I can source the correct ones. I believe the correct part numbers on the rims are:
81566-60270 (LH)
81556-60350 (RH)

Off to the Salvage Yard to see if I can source a 4pin Female Connection to avoid hacking the new assembly.

Hello,

It appears your Cruiser has European specification tail lights.

If I remember correctly, LH main combination light consists of park and reverse lights. RH combination light includes a fog light and a reverse light.

The bumper-mounted combination lights include stop lights and indicators. This is what I have at hand Not exactly European spec but still useful.

Check for a fog light switch on your center dash. When looking for parts, make sure you check Europe in the market section.

Hello,

One more thing. That part number was used on light duty (like your truck) 70 Series, and is still used on heavy duty models. Or so the catalog says.

Australian specification 70 Series Land Cruisers have the bumper mounted tail lights as well. I understand they adopted the European spec set up.

Why not switch to the standard 70 series taillights and lose the bumper ones?

Well, I am going to switch (upgrade the lights on the quarter panels) and keep the bumper lights. Otherwise, I would have two large holes on the bumper. I like the duplicity on the brake lights/having brake lights in both locations. Thanks for the links, jblueridge and Juan.

do you need to cut into the wiring harness or is just plug and play for the new lights?
I have the same issue, Id rather duplicate the bumper lights for when I tow a boat.

I have to splice the connections since PO cut out all the sockets/factory connections. Also, Toyota didn't run all the necessary wires to the back of the vehicle for the tri-color style lights on my particular model. (So this would be required step, if you wanted more than a reverse light on the left quarter panel). I will post some pics. I am running "jumpers" from the bumper brake lights and directionals up to the quarter panel brake lights and directionals/blinkers. The color codes for those that don't have electrical diagrams.

First pic is the Right Side Rear & Second pic is the Left Side Rear
The only tricky part is the horizontal double red hatch wires are the "blinkers/directionals"
Left side is Green w/Black w/red hatches and Right side is Green w/yellow w/red hatches

Black/White - Ground (Left and Right)
Green w/white - Brake Light (Left and Right)
Green w/orange (or faded red) - Left Brake Light
Green w/single red hatching - Right Brake Light
Green w/black w/double red hatching - Left Directional/Blinker
Green w/yellow w/double red hatching - Right Directional/Blinker

No luck at the salvage yard finding the correct 4 pin plugs. So I will have to splice in with spade connections. Other than sourcing new "rims" for the bumper lights, I am pleased with the outcome. Not as difficult as I initially thought it would be. Recommend getting 5 different colors of 16 gauge wire so it doesn't hurt your head too hard and it will be easier to understand/remember if you ever had to get into it again. Brake lights got red & green, turn signals yellow, black ground, reverse red w/blue tape.

Staying on the electrical theme, these arrived in the mail today.
Recommend ordering the (6) "self locking nuts" that are actually screws part 90189-05013,
because more than liking they will really be locked in there. All 6 of mine needed to be drilled out.

Great to see standardization in H4 plugs. Blue and White are reversed in these particular plugs, so just be careful.
For those who have spliced H4 connections, here are the wire codes for the Low Beams and High Beams.
White/Black = Ground - left side of the H4 connector
Red w/Black = Right side Low Beam - top of the H4 connector
Red w/Yellow = Right side High Beam - right side of the H4 connector
Red w/Green = Left side Low Beam - top of the H4 connector
Red w/Blue = Left side High Beam - right side of the H4 connector
