Hi all,

Eventually (in 12 to 18 months), I plan to remove our rear seats and install some locking drawers, but in the meantime, I'm trying to think of some ways to keep prying eyes away from any cargo in the rear. For other vehicles I've had a retractable pull cover but I don't think Toyota makes these for the LC and I don't think such a thing would even be possible without removing the rear seats. Not looking for anything bullet proof, just something that would cause someone going from car to car in a parking lot to not be tempted. Best I can think of is to just throw a dark blanket on top, but I wanted to ask if anyone has come up with any other options.

Thanks!

I have a dark moving blanket that I leave folded up in the car go area. It works great for a privacy cover, or for another layer if you haul grungy stuff, or if you need some padding to protect cargo.

The Heritage Edition comes with a retractable cargo cover, but I think the consensus here was that it would be very costly to retrofit.

I can vouch for this cover, although it won't work with the rear seats folded up unless you were to modify it.

I do the same. I always have 2 moving blankets in back to either to hide cargo, catch debris, or pad items. And when I go camping, it's an extra couple layers at the bottom of the tent for insulation/cushion.

Black blankets & the factory tinted glass makes things disappear. This works well if you have stuff in the second row too, while on mall crawling duty.

Thanks all! Helpful to know that covers do exist but I think I’ll avoid drilling for now. Going to pickup some nice dark moving blankets!

This thread got me to looking into a cover too. I noticed that the 2020 Heritage Edition comes with a cargo cover and has no 3rd row. So I looked up the part on parts.toyota.com and sure enough, there is an OEM cargo cover for the 2020 Land Cruiser. I have no idea if it can be retrofit to a ‘17 and I have no idea who to ask, but I’m tempted. I’ll take a look at a HE LC if I ever see one and figure out if the cover would work for me.

^ I am pretty sure it can be retrofitted, but I bet it will require new plastic covers. I was thinking about looking into it when LX was released as 5-seater, now with the Heritage Edition it became easier.

There could be issues with pre-2016 models like mine, though. I don't know what changed there to accommodate the power hatch.

I have looked into this.

Plan to get not only the cover($$$$), but complete lower side interior panels, and those won’t fit directly due to our seat mounting hardware built on the wheel wells. You’ll either have to remove (cut off) some metal brackets welded to those, or cut holes in the new side panels for said brackets to clear.

All of this assumes the 3rd row seatbelt and folding seat stowing anchor hardware won’t prevent those panels installing.. I doubt that would be a problem but it’s possible.

In the end it didn’t appear to be worth the cost and required modifications to either the vehicle body or new parts. To me anyway.

Good observations and analysis. The big blue beach towel I use for a cover is looking pretty good!

Reviving this thread once again. Would really like to retrofit the OEM cover. It appears that the main OEM assembly clips are in the position where the 3-row model’s cup holders are and it is a separate part of the side panels.
The front securing clips (used when the cargo over is in use to hold it extended) are surface mounted to the side panels just inside the rear hatch.
Everything appears to be mounted with screws and bolts, not molded into the panel. Therefore, while it is no doubt expensive, it appears doable to buy all the clips and add the mounting holes into the 3-row’s panels. I think the most difficult part might be figuring out exactly where the In-use extended clips need to go and then removing the entire side panel to drill and mount it all. See diagram. If this worked you would end up with a side panel that had the factory holes for the 3rd row mechanics with the addition of the clips for the tonne

has anyone attempted it?

If anyone on here with a 2 row HE is willing to take some good shots of the clips just inside the hatch and throw a measuring tape to it so we could see the approximate location...that would help. The clips are 64933 in this diagram.

@bloomjLC - I'm guessing you meant the right and left side clips at 64931B and 64932B. At least I hope so since that's what I took pics of. The pics are of the left side clips.

Those are the ones I meant, thank you! I’ll measure that area of my 3 row and see if anything would interfere with those.

If you get time I’d love to see some shots of the front mounting points for the cargo cover bar.
This looks to be about a $1000 job in parts....unless I can find a parts dealer willing to offer a good deal as a kit.

Also it appears that your panel has a cover where the handles for the seat release belongs...which would imply that one could potentially source the entire two- row side panels which would have the mounting holes for the cargo cover in them already and allow you to preserve the originals. I haven’t found that part number yet.

You can easily buy those blank panels where the manual seat releases go. I picked them up a couple of years ago on partssouq when I removed everything from my third row.

I wonder if they are using the existing captive nut for the front mount? I used that as a mounting point for a Raingler net.

We've found these retractable covers fairly useless and have removed them from every vehicle we’ve owned that has had them. A dark blanket is more useful for large items and is more versatile.
