Rear caliper rebuild

I recently picked up a complete rear axle assembly in fantastic condition, it included just about every part including the calipers. I’m not quite ready to perform the swap so I decided to rebuild the rear calipers for fun. I found some helpful videos but none specific to the gx. I’ve never done this before so if I did something stupid or wrong feel free to correct.

First step was to disassemble the calipers. I removed all the hardware including the bleed screws and soaked them all in some metal prep cleaner I had lying around. I removed the rubber boots from caliper brackets by just pulling them out. The 2 really small end caps can be poked out with a pick or screwdriver, etc.

Next step was to remove the caliper piston. Reinstall bleed screws and tighten them up. You will put air into caliper using the brake line hole. I put caliper in my vice and used a rubber band to attach a thin piece of wood in case piston popped out violently. KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE WAY. Now apply compressed air to brake line hole in caliper and piston should slide out. I used my Milwaukee compressor set to 25psi and it worked easily. I bet you could use a bike pump if you’re tough. Unless calipers are super rusty or stuck no need for a real air compressor. Much safer this way too. Then remove the old o ring inside caliper with your pick.

I soaked calipers, pistons and brackets in metal prep then cleaned them up with a wire brush where appropriate. Then some brake cleaner and let them dry.

Not necessary, but I painted them with some por 15 caliper paint, nothing professional but they look better to me. I didn’t paint where pads slide in, just the outside. Reassembly was easy using the Lexus kit (0447960030). It comes with all necessary parts and was about $15. Getting dust boot on piston correctly was hardest step for me, but I figured it out in about 10 minutes and I’m not very smart. I used the Lexus lube that came in kit for the pistons and o rings, and syl glide for the rubber parts, caliper pins and any other place that needed it.
