My 200 Series Land Cruiser (2018) recently failed it's annual/required safety inspection when it was pointed out that the vehicle's rear brake lights didn't work.

I've looked at fuses both in the engine compartment, and under the driver side dash, which corresponded to the rear lights - no burned out fuses found.

Ordered and installed new tail lights and found that the brake lights STILL do not come on when the brake peddle is pressed!

The center high brake light on the rear hatch comes on, as well as LED brake lights in the assemblies mounted on the vehicle's body. The problem resided in the assemblies mounted on the tail gate.

Power is going to the tail gate mounted lights as the running lights ARE activated when exterior lights are used. In addition, the yellow hazard lights/flashers/turn indicators & the white reverse lights all work normally.

At this point I have no idea what the issue could be. Wondering if that portion of the light assy does NOT light up when the brakes are used, despite LED bulbs being present/visible thru the red plastic lens??

Hope the attached photo of the driver side rear light assy helps. I attempted to circle the area of the rear light that doesn't light up, which is what the inspector claimed as being inoperable...

MANY thanks in advance!!!

The inspector is wrong. The lights you have circled in your pdf don't light up on my '17 with the brakes. Never have, never will. They are not brake lights and yours are working normally.

DOT has many rules out there for many things and I believe one of them has to do with the brake lights cannot be on a rear hatch since its something that opens. Look at any car out there that has lights on a trunk lid. None of those lights are ever brake lights. Running lights are allowed. Newer dodge chargers are a good example of this.

I know one exception to this. Newer Audi Q7. but that car probably has a switch on the rear hatch that won't let you take the car out of park without the back hatch closed and the lights working.

You’re definitely going to have to go back and have them pass you since those lights are never going to light up. Here’s some I just took of my 16. They never come on

Reminds me of the time in Fremont, CA, I got a ticket from the CHP for having "clear turn signals" on my 1990 coupe.

-90-91 Integra Turn Signals body were clear with orange bulbs.

-93-93 Integra taillights were orange lens. I had to go to court, fight it, with the DOT numbers in place.

1- I'm sorry this happened to you.

2 - As previously mentioned, your pseudo-government minder is wrong. Up to you on how you let them know how many ways of stupid they are. I would also be sure to at least mention billing them for the part you bought due to their prior and current incompetence.

Good luck. Follow up post with the resolution if you can.
