Hey All,

I'm in the process of changing my rear rotors and pads on a 98 UZJ100.

I got the right rear done no problem, but the left rear is giving me hell.

I noticed there is a traditional brake cylinder that pushes the pad into the rotor. I also noticed that part of the brake slides back/forth on two rails. How much is that part of the brake suppost to slide? The right rear slid with ease, and I could actually seperate that part from the brake. The left rear is not slideing at all, and seems to be hindering my ability to put the caliper back on the rotar.

So, basically, I am unable to seperate the pads enough to get the brake onto the rotar.

...and yes, i did drain some fluid and push the cylinder all the way in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated??

JR:cheers:

Your caliper slides appear to be stuck. There should be some movement in them. If not, pull the pins out and regrease them, insert them back in and you should be ready to go.

Use brake grease formulated for disc brakes! (Don’t ask me how I know:o ). Clean the pins real good, put some grease on them and should be smooth.
Good luck.

Are the pins at then end of the slide rail? Are they associated with the 14mm bolts that hold the slides on?

I could not find any other "pins".

Thanks again for the help.

The only pins I am aware of, for the brake system, are on the front calipers...

Never mind!!!! I figured it out. I got the slide apart...one of the slides was totally rusted. There was no "pins" per say on the rear brakes, just the bolts that release the slides from the actual caliper.

The whole reason I started this brake job was because the back RIGHT was grinding metal on metal. It seems the back LEFT was locked up and most likley overloading the back right, which caused it to crap out.

Last question:

HOW important are those shims?? Mainly the long shims that attach to the back of the pad? I'm putting them back in, but a few of them seem rusty?

Thanks again for all the help!

I'm new to wrenchin on these 100's. I've been hard into the fj60's for the last 4 years..

Cheers,

They are anti-squeel shims...

...As for the grease to lubricate the slides, what do you people recomend?

I assume this is a High temp grease?

Thanks again!

Sorry about the confusion on the pins, thanks Dan for pointing out my error. :o
JR, You should probably clean the shims up and reuse them if possible.

Kragen Auto Parts, out here in the West, sells individual 'single-serving' packets of high-temp disc brake grease...check your local auto parts store for disc brake grease.

If you buy OEM pads, they come with correct grease and shims.

I bought OEM pads, from Toyota. They did not come with the grease or shims.

In fact, Toyota told me the shim set was another $40!!

Yeah, the front/rear pads don't come w/ shims. That's a separate P/N. FSM says to put disc brake grease on both surfaces of the inner shim (the one between the outer shim and rear pad). There are 4 inner shims, 4 outer shims in the rear kit. IIRC, Sewell lexus sells the rear shim kit for $32.
