I just got a '74 fj40. Has anyone moved the rear axle back to extend the wheel base? Make the rear wheel fit the wheelwell better? Would it make a difference?

You can do a spring flip front of the spring to back, It would add about 3-4 inches, You should lengthjen your drive line.
If you think about how the wheel moves in the wheel well, You need more room behind the tire than in front, just a thought.
Good luck

I've heard that the HFS springs give about an inch of additional wheelbase by centering the rear axle in the wheel well but have no personal experience otherwise as mentioned above you can flip your springs and gain about 2.5 inches per axle. What are your goals for your rig?
