Sounds like the pinion seal. Are you running a traction bar?
Best case:Seal is leaking(sand?) replace it without tearing diff apart.
Worst Case:Pinion gear and/or Pinion bearing is worn and allowing movement of pinion.Pull diff apart and replace bearings and seal.

Good Luck!

Well I had bad u-joints for a lil while and it was gettin bad vibs.......

....But thats all I offroad on down here(sand sand sand), And on road.....sand everywhere

hope its just the seal....thanks man.

anyone know where to get one? if not ill try C DAN

Any TEQ parts dealer... will more than likely have to order it.

A a word of warning: do NOT go to AutoZone/Checker/Pep Boys and buy an aftermarket seal. Get an OEM seal, they are much better. Here's a pic of the aftermarket seal that I pulled out of my leaking rear diff when I re-geared, next to a new OEM seal:

Note how the aftermarket seal doesn't have the additional dirt/dust shield lip that extends out into the shield on the flange. The OEM seal is much more rigid, has a better seal design. For the cost difference, don't waste your time with the cheaper stuf.

thanks a lot man, just PMed c-dan. I hope its nothing to bad, my rear diff does sound a lil louder tho. eeek

anyone know how hard it is too swap you rear 3rd member to the front and the front to the back? because the front has low low low miles. I could at least get a look see at my r/p before i swap in the 4.88s.

It's not hard, just a lot of labor. You'll need a new pair of diff gaskets and a cork gasket for the rear diff cover. And since you'll be tearing apart the front axle, you'll need new gaskets for the spindles and locking hubs. And gear oil, of course. LOTS of rags and rubber/latex gloves too. Don't forget to change the axle tube seals in the front, whether they're leaking or not.

Do you have a FSM? You'll definitely need it.

BTW, when you pull out the rear diff, don't reinstall the thrust block into this diff. The front one won't have one, and you only need one in the rear.

fffffff screw that ill just wait and put the 4.88s in.... that will be enough of a job

That's what I'd do too. In fact, I just finished mine today.
