drove the cruiser to work this morning. went out to run an errand and the key will not turn. sprayed in the lock cylinder w/ wd40. no luck. looked in my fsm but couldnt find anything about how to remove the lock cylinder . also the button you push to remove the key will not push down. any ideas? thanks

Pull the plastic covers of to access the tumbler assy. There is a silver pin that has to be pushed in to remove the cylinder. Looks like a rivet inside a hole.

is the pin spring loaded? i see a small approx 1/8 in hole in the cylinder housing. do i have to drive the pin through?if i get the cylinder out can i crank the truck with a screwdriver ? thanks

It does need to be punched throuogh then it will slide out. It doesn't take much to get it to recess. Good small drift will do. Then you can start it with a screwdriver.

thanks, i will try to get it out tonight and take it to the locksmith in the AM. while i was waiting for your reply i went out to the truck and was able to turn the key with pliers but when i turned it off the push button would not go down. i could pull the key out but had to use the pliers to restart. i think my problem is in the button

Probably got jambed up. I know CCOT has new switches if you need them. Locksmith will work also. Good luck with the switch.

I had similar trouble when I used a worn key. Try the sharpest, newest key that you have.

Just put the key in the ignition and unload the steering lock mechanism by rocking the steering wheel back and forth.

Try turning the key at the same time.

It is not uncommon for the ignition cylinder to be all but impossible to turn, if there is a load on the steering lock system.

In order to remove the lock cylinder from the column, you will need to turn the key to the accessory position, then press in on the lock pin that you should be able to see after the plastic steering column covers are removed. It will be facing you as you are sitting in the driver seat. After the lock pin has been pressed in, you will be able to pull the whole lock cylinder out of the steering column.

Just needed to express my gratitude to this post. I began what was supposed to be a simple swap of ignition switches which started to turn into a hair pulling ordeal "why won't this %&$*@! thing come out! :bang:I had the steering wheel cover removed and read something about retainer screws in Haynes (80 series not 60). I was at the point of taking a hammer  to it when I read about the cylinder needing to be in the accessory postion . Cylinder popped right out. New one in. Hopefully no more running down the battery because the lock slipped into ACC position........

Mud saves the day.
