I need to confirm which self-adjust nut goes on which side of the truck (1985 FJ60, US). One of the adjustment nuts is right hand threaded and the other is left hand threaded. The FSM is a little confusing on this. So:

(1) does anybody know which side (passenger or drivers) the right hand thread nut goes?

-or-

(2) should the auto-adjuster lever push the outboard side of the star nut down or up to tighten.

While all the componets seem to be working properly and the auto-adjust lever pushes the star wheel down when I pull the e-brake cable with the drum off, my rear brakes don't seem to really auto adjust. I currently have the right hand threaded nut installed on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Thanks for your help.

if you were to adjust the brakes with a screwdriver from underneath the car you would place the driver under the bottom edge of adjuster then lever up,i put new drums on mine last week, hope that helps.

If this isn't enough, lemme know.

But I just hit my left thumb with the BFG! I used to take the drums off! So I'm icing it down. !%$&*$!!!

Goldchaser: lever up meaning pushing the inboard side of the star wheel up? And is that to tighten or loosen? Thanks.

Ouch! I don't use a hammer anymore. I have a piece of 1" square tube longer than the drum's diameter. I drilled a couple of holes in it and I run bolts through into the tapped holes in the drum. I use some larger nuts as spacers to stand the tube off a little from the brake drum. This gives me a handle with some leverage that allows me wiggle the drum off.

Thanks for the pic's. It looks like the right hand threaded adjusting bolt is on the passenger side, and left hand thread on the drivers side.

Cool. Glad it helped.

Nice idea for the tube handle for the drums.... I think I'll make one.

As for the thumb, real men use Gorilla tape.

yes thats right, and that will tighten them.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually found the information in the "early" (1980) body and chassis manual. It specifically shows that the RH threaded bolt goes on the RH side and the LH threaded bolt goes ont he LH side. So it seems that mine have been installed correctly.

Thread Resurrection: Star Wheel Orientation Question

Problem
Star wheel on DS seems to be gradually pulling in the shoes after e-Brake is set and released. Every 3 wks i need to readjust DS brakes bc they because useless and no braking power

Question
Are the left/right star wheels interchangeable? I thought they were the exact same part regardless what drum you installed them on

Thanks, Shaft!

Sitting and Looking at the star wheel (DS or PS) after removing drum, should the star wheel pull in the shoes when rotating star wheel AWAY form observer. This would be the same scenario if rotating star wheel downwards from behind the wheel and rotating with screwdriver from open slot
